Here's my site. Finally, I've started updating it. There isn't much there yet, I haven't put in bg or fancy anything. But what do you think of this layout? Should I have my title instead of a pic in the very top?

Any feedback as to layout would be very very welcome, along w/ any other suggestions, of course.

Thank you!

Oh and just FYI: I plan on putting more pics up along the top of that upper frame as soon as I get them converted

mmmm.... yah..
it... uh... came up that time.
I'm looking it over... and I'm not impressed thus far.
I'll go more in-depth shortly.

LOL. If you'll notice what I said: there isn't much there yet. I only just started updating it. But before I add a ton of stuff, etc, I want to see what people think of the LAYOUT.

Don't worry...I'm not impressed thus far either and it's my own site.

[edit: Oh! And also: Do you think I should make the links target="_blank" or should I have them target the body of the page? (the one with the "Welcome to my site!")]

Well... that's just dandy.

First of all.... the "layout" is pretty weak.
I don't like the idea of the picture at the top.... but that doesn't nearly annoy me as much as all this expandable window bullshit.
Why give the ability to expand everything?.... the only reason I can see right now, is so that you can give a visitor something more interesting to do, than read your content.

When the top section overlaps the photo (as it did by default when the page loaded) .... it creates a horizontal scrollbar. *shudders*

mmm... what's with these banner advertisements?.. did you want to put those on there?... or was it somesort of blackmail issue by a backstabbing friend?

-Okay... all that said-
You're best off, laying out a website on paper, prior to jumping right into a jumble of scripting nonsense that's both visually and structurally un-appealing.

So, I think you should start over from scratch... and re-think in your head what direction, and feel that you want your site to take on.

And when you get back to re-designing.... leave all that adjustable crap and horizontal scrollers at the door.

Genevieve: I find myself nodding in agreement with Michael's points. You are going to have to think this thing out before you actually start coding - links to the Hamster Dance? Did you not see that episode of the Simpsons?

I would recommend:

1. You steer clear of frames.

2. You think about what you want on your page and why. Keep that left hand area for navigation and have a page for fun links if you want it.

3. You think about the site sturcture and what you want and what you may add in the future.

4. You think about the colours you are going to use - visit ZOX's Color Wizard.

5. You read DmS' tutorial which you can reach via this thread:
http://www.gurusnetwork.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=12;t=000116

Keep plugging away - you'll get there faster than you think

Whoa... I think I have to agree with what has been said here so far. I'd also like to expand on one of Emps' points: frames.

There are really only a few situations where you would be better off using frames, and this is definitely not one of them. That frameset you have going pops up six different scrollbars (three vertical, three horizontal--at least at 1024x768). I almost had a heart attack when I saw all those scrollbars (well, OK, not really).

I guess I have to ask: why frames? You could have easily pulled this off with tables or (better yet) CSS. Especially considering that you're not opening up links on the left in the content frame on the right (not something I recommend, by the way), I really don't see the need for frames.

The bottom line is this--the layout of your site will (should) be determined by your content. You're going at things the wrong way. Like Emps said, first you need to decide what you want on your site and why. Then, once you have a clear idea of what's going to be in there, you can work on a layout that will present that content in the best way. Doing the layout first and then filling it with content later will only ensure that you end up with a mess.

That's it for now. I do have opinions about some of the other elements of the site, but you specifically asked for opinions on the layout.

Keep at it, and let us know how it goes.
