http://thorpeco.com/misc

Hey all, this is my first forray into the Site Reviews section in a while. I haven't done much with web design lately but my brother-in-law is trying to build up his contracting business that he does on the side so as a Xmas present my sis and I got him his own domain.

Of course, this leaves me to do the designing because if you look at http://www.thorpeco.com right now, that's the page he's done. Please use the barf bags in the seat backs if you feel faint.

So what I'd like is some impressions on the first page. That's going to be the template for the rest of the pages and I'd like to make it solid before moving on. I'd really appreciate some browser checks on it because all I have is IE6 and don't care to infest my machine with lots of excess browsers.

Thanks in advance to all of you.

Edit: What he wanted was a nice simple site. He wasn't interested in a lot of bells and whistles because the people he's aiming at are most likely not the most web savvy. He also would like to learn more HTML (he's a smart dude -- mechanical engineer) so that he can do updates himself. That's why I went with the tables layout instead of using CSS to position the elements. I figured it would be easier for him to understand it that way and be able to make changes himself.

IE5.0 If the page is supposed to be left aligned everything looks fine with the exception of 'Remodelling construction and repair' which has a bad case of the jaggies.

No, no, no! heh The link in the middle of the page is the old one. The link at the top is the one I want reviewed.

Cripes! That middle one is terrible. I think he said he made it in Publisher.

i am by no means a critic...but in opera 6.5 there's a space between the top of the main button and the bottom of the top bit....dunno how to better explain it. i put the pic to show you. also there's that white bit around that graphic...dunno if that was supposed to be there or if it was supposed to match the background grey.
other than that it looks fine, loads very quickly (i'm on dial up).

ok...so i can't put a pic up...have no where to put it right now..so i'll try to email it to ya

Set the background color to white; it's not always the default.

The image on the right needs more padding between itself and the right margin, and between itself and the text on its left.

Aside from that, the only thing that bothers me is how the grey line along the underside of the top area separates it from the menu bar on the left, which looks like it should be right up against the top.

Gotcha slime, I missed that damned bgcolor thing.

As for the image, it's only serving as a place holder at the moment. I'm waiting to see what type of picture he wants to put there. It may end up being a random image or some kind of JS swapper. He may want a kind of before/after type thing. Once he lets me know that, I can get the padding how I want it.

Gracias.

Note that there are times when you *don't* want to set the background color to white. People who change their default background color (such as myself) usually do so for a good reason (in my case, it's to reduce contrast when editing or reading text). You may chose to leave the background color alone to respect that. In this case, however, since you have images which are meant to be up against a white background, it's best to set it explicitly, since it gives the page a cleaner look.

I am using Mozilla on FreeBSD and I notice that you content image is aligned all the way to the right, which bugs me. It makes the page seem really streached out. Also I don't like the text font. I think it should be more a verdana or arial as opposed to the Times look you have now. It just doesn't seem to fit the clean design you have.

I have not noticed any bug under Opera 7.
