how could I change the background colours of a text box? and the its size?

in general that would work with the css-handlers:
<style>
input{background: #000000; border:1px solid #cccccc; color: #cccccc;}
textarea{background: #000000; border: 1px solid #cccccc ; color: #cccccc;}
</style>

Same way you'de change the background color of any object on a page - find out what it is referred to as, and specify it's value in your style sheet.
http://www.w3.org will be very helpful!
