I don't understand either. An image map is an image. I have never heard of being able to change the image map's background with CSS.

I assume the effect you're trying to create is a polygon full of color. I doubt there's a way to do that without making some sort of rollover (multiple images swapped).

ha, well... maybe I haven't been clear enough.

Ok.
Let's imagine an image of a coutry map.
I associate this image with a <MAP>, composed of several <AREA> zone. Thoses zones are, as one have guessed, the different states of the country.

What I want to do is exactly what slime suggested: flash some colored polygon when the user hover the states...

Was just wondering if this was possible using simple css; and obviously it isn't...

Nope. You'll probably have more luck with some sort of transparent overlayed gifs.

Image maps are just different than regular elements.

either that or go for a whole world of pain using vml or svg to draw the country and its areas and then use script to change colours area colours on mouse over

it all depends on how masochistic you're feeling and which browsers you're aiming on suporting

you can have the big image but unhide layers over the states onmouseover..
