http://www.hotkey.net.au/~deela/

if you go to any of the pages besides the main page, there's supposed to be a lil home button in the bottom right corner....but it's not there. i dunno why, cuz it's showing up that it's there in the files that i transferred.
this is the bit of code that has that image in it:
<a href="Main.htm"><img src="images/home.jpg" alt="Home" border="0" style="position:absolute; top: 525px; left: 922px; width:55px; height:55px;" /></a>
is there something wrong with that??

btw...i don't know if this post should be in here or not, so please feel free to move it

Just a guess, but try taking out that slash at the end.

Also, you should try putting all your styles in one place (like a style section, or even a separate style sheet). It would make your code easier to read and alter. And the whole idea behind CSS is to allow you to separate style from content.

I'm sure someone will come along with the answer shortly (if the above is not it--I don't do my styles inline like that, so I'm not really sure what the slash is for).

A little off topic, but, I always run a mile when I see:

quote:
Best Viewed with I.E.5+
1024 x 768
56.6K

It's like saying "If you aint got IE5 @ 1024 on dial-up - go somewhere else cuz my site's not gonna work for ya!"
At which point, I generally hit [alt]+[f4]

Don't scare off potential visitors.
Instead, make your site (I can feel the fear building)
---> Cross-Browser-Compatible <---

Eeek!

p.s. there's no need for the closing slash - img is a closed tag by definition.

Um, just wanted to let you know that I took a look at the site and the image placeholder is there, but the image source is apparently wrong, as I'm just getting a red X...

It might just be easier to make "home" a menu selection on the left (not to mention more user-friendly).

Lacuna: OK that image is pointing at:
http://www.hotkey.net.au/~deela/images/home.jpg

and there is no file there which is why it isn't showing. Right I've had a bit more of a nose around and you need to make the folder name start with a capital I as this image does work:
http://www.hotkey.net.au/~deela/Images/home.jpg

Suho1004: The slash needs to be in the img tag to close it - it makes these kind of tags XHTML compliant.

dufty: thanx! i didn't even think about it that way, i suppose it does come off as a lil "uppity" lol thanx, and i already fixed that! as for cross browser compatibility...HA..i was luck enough to get it even as far as it is LOL but that's definately something that will come later
emperor: thank you!!! i didn't realize that, that would throw it off. it's always something silly with me!!

thank you all SO very much!! i love coming here cuz you're all so helpful! if it wasn't for the asylum, i wouldn't have my very first web page lol i do suppose i really need to put my nose to the grindstone and learn css properly...as i am only learning the bits that i "need" to know to do something lol

Lacuna: No worries - in return, as you live 'up the road' from him, you could slap Dracusis if you see him (big, wet fish are always good for this).

If you want to learn CSS you can't do much better than read through the tutorials at the GN :

i would slap him with a big wet fish, but self-preservation comes into play here...if he's not into gettin flogged with a big wet smelly tuna, then he won't help me anymore lol
though, on the other hand, that may be just his kinda kink and i'd get even more help outta him!!
hmm....will hafta think this one out carefuly lol

yes, i go to guru's on a daily basis, and i have even saved the tuts so i don't have the excuse that i'm not online and can't view them...but do you think i can be bothered with actually doin em?! HA...i scan through, find the lil tid bit that i need...and that's it. bad habit to get into i know...
i am just goin to do it though...i HAFTA!! it's only goin to help me lol
thanx again!

Lacuna: If he enjoyed it then slapping him with a big, wet fish wouldn't be any fun now would it?

On the technical aspects of this question I would recommend that everyone use lower case for folder and file names (and use the underscore to separate words) - it becomes second nature and means problems like this becom a thing of the past.

Yeah, I'll second that one.

Also remember to make sure all of your file name extension are lower case. Although I often opt for the programming defacto naming standard, remove spaces and capatilise the first letter of each word like: purpleCoffeeMug.jpg... Just cause I lothe underscores, they look ugly. Heh.

Dracusis: That naming convention is also storing up problems for yourself (but in the end it is your call). I quite like the old underscores and if you break the words up it means that search engines can extract the words from them (another good way to sprinkle a few extra keywords into your page).

Emps: So that's what those slashes are for.... is that actually a new XHTML thing, or is it a workaround? It seems kind of odd, if you ask me. Then again, what do I know.

Lacuna: Heh, not sure how much help I was, but I'm glad your problem has been solved.

i usually do have my files in lower case, and as you've seen, i capitalize folder names...i do it that way because that's how my "mental sorting system" works (yes, i'm aware that i'm weird) and i try to keep my files names short and to the point...and if i can't, then i use abbreviations....that only my "mss" can figure out lol
this system works for me about 90% of the time...cuz i have "those" days once in a while and nuthin makes sense

and emp...good point (about the fish)...but then again, if he keeps helpin me cuz of it... then to each his own i say! lol but personally, i'd prefer it more if he didn't like it. i mean, if i'm goin to put in all that effort and hafta touch a slimy yucky fish, than *i'd* like to get some enjoyment out of it lol

suho: you were a help, believe me! and the thought was there at least, which i appreciate! looks like we all learned something

back to the fish thing for a sec...they have those lil prickly fish here...porcupine fish i think is what they're called.. they'd be extra painful! OOOO....ya could tie a few of them to the end of a few strings...like a whip kinda thing...
yikes! ok...yall are makin me creep myself out lol

Lacuna: Ouch - here we tend to think that large wet fish is sufficient

Suho1004: See the XHTML tutorial at the GN. The actual solution should be:

<img src=""></img>

but older browsers break if you do that - adding a space and a slash is a perfectly acceptable XML practice and degrades nicely.
