Is there any way to get my left and right navigations to stretch to the width of my page? For the life of me I can't figure this out.

See http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum8/HTML/000727.html

I guess that if you can accept a footer (with the width at 100%), it's very possible, as shown in the thread above (in its links), but if you don't want a footer, I'm yet to see it work.

EDIT: I found this: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/fauxcolumns/

yeah......check out the link that I posted. It works really well.

I did a test page to get a two column layout using that method. Haven't gotten just right but it's working OK so far...

here it is.

I think I've figured it out, based on CPrompt's link. Just gonna have to move some divs around. At least I know it's possible now.

Thanks muchly.

Ramasax: if you figure out how to get the content div to expand further along the width, please let me know. I fought with this for a little while but now i have too many projects to attend to

Ok, will do. I'll probably fiddle with it this weekend some, and hopefully make some type of progress.

edit: Well, I got the columns to extend in IE, but no others. Odd. Also odd that it worked on a client's site using the same layout but not on my own, but that can be explained by my sloppy coding. There is an extra div in mine for the drop-down menu, hmm.

here's a link to what I have so far, don't mind the missing images. http://www.ramasaxdesign.com/3columns/template3col.htm
Just noticed there is now a large gap at the bottom of my copy as well. oh well, Back to the drawing board.

Well, just wasted 4 hours...to no avail. I'm calling it a day on this issue. If anyone wants to play with what I put up, feel free.

It really doesn't make any sense, what is so hard about telling something to stretch 100% within the constraints of its containing div? Even funnier is that IE picks up on this and nothing else does. I wonder if that is a glitch in ie, or a glitch in the others.

Well, I achieved what I was driving at. 3 columns, with a margin around the window and a 1 px border around all sides, just like a nice little table would look.

A huge thanks go out to Paul over at Gurus, I combined his with mine and this is what I ended up with. As it stands, it is a sloppy mess from lots of copying and pasting and I'm too tired right now to fix it up, but I'll post a cleaned up demo version shortly if anyone is interested.
3 columns

I needed an alternate 2 column version, so here is that as well:
2 columns

One small glitch I am aware of. The outer margin under the footer only shows in IE, but I haven't tried doing anything with it yet. I don't consider that too important. There is also a table in that header (I am in the process of converting it to CSS, which is giving me a hard time) and the border is screwy in IE.

CPrompt: Is this what you were looking for or did I misunderstand your explanation above?

Guess nobody's interested, I thought I was onto something, but I guess not.

Well, you are in fact onto something, and it is a good implimentation of the 3 column box model...perhaps if you'd care to explain more behind its development
