Any ideas on what are the best encoders/rippers out there?

I used to use EZ cd and Blade but I haven't rippped a CD in over 18 months now. The only comparison between encoders I could find on the net was about the same age.
Surely they have advanced a litlle since then.

Thanks

the quality of the mp3 depends on the codec you use. LAME is said to be one of the best.

software:
i personally am a great fan ofCDex. (comes with LAME )

Thanks Grumble, I'll give Lame a try. I was also pointed in the direction of fraunhofer and will give noth it and Lame a try to see what I think works bewst.

I did a little more research after posting and found out that Nero can do the ripping and encoding. As I already have Nero installed (and I think the world of it) I will probably just use that.

I think that Fraenhofer IIS has the best encoder. They were one of them who developed mp3.
I use neros burning rom when ripping and encoding but I have disabled the mp3PRO checkbox because it sucks!

which is the best decoder is a discussion worth, but it isnt said that frauenhofer is the best. but afaik frauenhofer invented the first mp3 codec many years ago and then the mpeg group took it over.

There is an encoder named BladeEnc. It uses the same algorithm to pack the sound data as Fraunhofer IIS. This encoder is illegal in some country because Frauenhofer has a patent on the algorithm. Some think this is the best encoder because it is as good as Frauenhofer and its free (in some countries)!
I think this is correct but I can be very wrong!

intersting!

but personally i think its kinda senseless to make a codec illegal in some countries. there are no borders on the net.
and should that mean, i am not allowed to download mp3s (yes im not allowed at all) which are encoded with BladeEnc?
how will someone control this? impossible.

I think it was BladeEnc that I used in the past, I just called it blade though. I did not realise tha it was illegal anywhere however. Ignorance is no excuse.

Cheers for the info OlssonE, I still haven't gotten around to testing the two encoders mentioned here earlier, so little time and so much to do. I will do it soon and let you know how it went.
