i need to make a commercial, and i was thinking of making it in flash but i'm not that good. I came upon these things. http://www.flashkit.com/movies/Animations/Vector_Animations/People/Vince_Ca-Neil_Dig-3052/index.php
http://www.flashkit.com/movies/Animations/Vector_Animations/People/The_Head-Robert_B-4337/index.php
http://www.flashkit.com/movies/Animations/Vector_Animations/People/Bruce_Le-Ka_mong-2836/index.php

i was wondering how they make them. To me it looks like they were already some sort of video clip then they took them to flash and did some stuff to them to make it look like a flash animation.

Does anybody know how to make these, or know of any tutorials around somewhere?
thanks

o00stud00o: They have converted film footage into into vectors. I'm not sure if it has to be done frame by frame or there isa fancy tool that does it but see here for discussion:
http://development.gurusnetwork.com/discussion/thread/1738/

esp:
http://www.gurusnetwork.com/tutorials/flash/paint2photo.html

[edit: Actually I have a free copy of Flix which does movie to Flash conversion
www.wildform.com/flix/

and I suspect that kind of thing might be what you want]

o00stud00o: Hmmmmmm GN must have been down for a bit - seems to be good now (if not try again later).

[edit: Ah the GN site appears to be down but the dev site seems to be working - a temporary glitch I'm sure ]

Also let us know what you find out in your research

Heres how those effects are done (Emps tool "flix" automates this process):

1) Take your piece of video footage and copy the frames you want for the animation. Most video requires 30 frames per second. These effects use less than that number, thats what creates the "timelapse photo" effect in the animation. It also keeps the file size down. You'll want around 15 or less. Less is jerky, more is smooth.

2) Import the frames in sequence into flash(this is a frame-by-frame animation).

3) One-by-One select the bitmaps and goto- modify > trace bitmap. Use the color threshhold setting to determine how much detail you want the higher the number the less detail will remain in the animation. 100 is a good setting. Use the same settings on each frame.

4) After you've finished applying the trace to each frame export and play.

I've never liked flix(not enough control) but it can be time saver.

There is a really excellent article at Hillman Curtis.com look for the link to video into vectors, I brought that book about a year ago, one of the best books i have ever seen written about flash, written by hillman curtis himself.

In case you didnt know who he is he used to be the creative director of Macromedia, and now heads up his own firm, he is one of the all time highest award winners for flash and its related technologies..

The Book is titled Flash Web Design, the art of motion graphics. Availiable from New Riders Publishers.

They go into a project they did, doing exactly what you are looking at doing now....
