I just got POV-Ray v3.1.
I studied the tuts and every piece of information I could get my hands on. Does anyone have anything more on the this wonderful program? So far I can make all the shapes from memory, but making custum stuff like is going to be hell.

I think that Pho, ph, ph, ph-phong, uses POV-Ray, you might find some tutorials if you visited his site. I think he has a forum too, they might have some POV-Ray info.

Well grumble, I have only been able to make "logic shapes" i.e square, circle, triangle, hex ect. I guess what I really need is practice with the program, but I'm trying to mathematically trace letters for a sig, but it's sooooo hard and actually hurting my head trying to figure it all out. I understand the lighting and 3d worlds because I used build "unreal" lvls, but I'll check out the links. Thanks

Grumble, not being updated anymore? Take a look at www.povray.org for information on the upcoming POV-Ray 3.5! Including photons (for realistic caustics), improved radiosity (for ambient lighting), isosurfaces (specify your own object with a 3D function) and more!

Dark, take a look at the text object =) Have you looked through the walkthrough that is provided with the POV-Ray program itself? Click the word "scene" on the toolbar to get to it.

~sigh~

Yeah I was interested in getting into pov-ray a while back. I still am yet free time does not exist for me at the moment. Hopefully after my upcoming holiday I will have more time, .

Whe I had initially started to play around with pov-ray, I had asked the same question, "Where is a good place to learn".

As far as I can tell, the documentation and tutorials that come with pov-ray are the most comprehensive guides to the application (as they should be, like Slime told me).

In addtition, I also found a few useful resources scouring the net:

Google Groups (Raytracing)
Phong
Andrew's Pov Place
POV-Ray Language Reference

I know I have a couple more good links at home. I'll post them tonight.

edit: damn ubb url=...

Dark, I used to dabble with UnrealEd 2.0. I've come pretty close to finishing a few levels (DM). One very cool thing I did was use 3DS Max to build the bulk of the level. Did a few really nice outdoor scenes with skyboxes. Just export DXF and import into UEd2. Had some problems with normals and the brushes being flipped, but nothing that can't be worked around.

Can use 3DS Max (or any DXF exporting 3D prog) to build brushes off all sorts. UEd2 is very unnatural when it comes to building most things as a 3D prog. Had major problems figuring out how to move vertices around. Also, UEd2 doesn't have real vertex editing capabilities.

WoLGreal 2.0 (?) can export UT meshes to DXF. Very cool. Once you get it exported, all you have to do is grab the skin from the UTX. Toss into 3D prog and play. I had some fun playing with the Xan model and chainsaw.

When I get around to reinstalling UT, I might post some level roughs for you look at just so you can see what can be done in a 3D prog for building a level for UT.

Hey would you mind sending me acouple screenshots of your skyboxes or lvls? I really enjoy creating skyboxes , but I love to make 2 sided walls with one side mirror in a pretty dark room with only 2 light shinning on the wall. Then I have a walk through wall on the other side of the lvl with a mover that goes horizonal from one side of the lvl to the other side in 2 seconds (set by the mover properties) then it rams into a elevator which goes up and then inside the wall (all this can't be seen by anyone in the lvl) to where there is a sniper rifle and ammo. Hahaha it's time to pick them off

Just got done installing UT. I'll see about putting some stuff together for ya. Week or so.

Sniper rifle. Gotta love it. I hate it when my friend pops me with sniper when we are close-quarter. You should try Crotch Shot mutator. Works great with sniper rifle. I actually made Crotch Master! once. Unfortunately, too slow to get a screen cap.

ChumChum posted some awesome Flash in that thread, but I can't reach his server right now. I'll keep trying, and when I do, I'll archive it. (I should have archived when I first saw it.)

So, give me some time and I'll get some stuff to ya.

edit: Doh! I didn't archive my brush things and levels. Gotta start from scratch. :sigh:

Sweet! thanks WJ, I'll be waiting...

ok here is a outline of what I'm trying to do in Prov-Ray 3.1.

I looked through all the links and tuts, but I still can't figure out how to make letters...do I just have to keep playing with it? I can make it all look like blocks, but I'm trying to make it look realisitic. I think anyone can make a "M" out of 4 rectangles aligned the right way, but how do you make it "smooth"? I have a friend that is going to come over on thursday at help me out, but any help here is still welcome. thank you Prospero for all the links..they have helped in other areas of Prov-Ray.

OK, Assuming you're using Windows, here's how to get to the info on the text object:

Help (menu)
Help on the POV-Ray Scene Language (menu item)
Help Topics (button at the top of the window)
"text" (type it in)
Display (button, click it)
Text Object (select from list)
Display (button, click it)

That scene you've already got there isn't bad for a beginner, btw.
