Ok I made a cylinder, then I Modified it with 'Edit Mesh'
I then made it curve (like a tree branch) and rendered it.
It rendered successfully, then I Added a Texture to the branch and I get an error when trying to render.

The Following Objects Require Map Coordinates and may not Render Properly:
Cylinder03
Cylinder04
Cylinder05
Cylinder06

If you can't figure out the problem just by works, post a reply and I'll post the TREE.max file in a zip

Thanks

Well.. the problem is clear. They need map coordinates. To fix it, give them map coordinates.

..Now, an explanation. When non-simple shapes are textured with bitmap images, they require UVW mapping to position the texture correctally on the object. Choose Add UVW Map from the modify pull-down menu, and set up the UVW's. Generally cylenders and planer maps work the best. Next, from the pull-down menu, choose unwrap UVW, and then choose edit. Your texture should appear, as well as an unfolded map of your model. You can adjust the points here, so that the texture covers the right areas of your object.

You can also use the 'built in' coordinates. Go back in the object's history to the cylinder creation, and check the check-box that says something like 'use mapping coordinates' (I don't have Max installed here, but it's something like that).

The mapping coordinates will propogate through the changes you've made, getting distorted a bit. If all you've done is some bending, though, they're still probably more accurate than anything you can add with a single UVW map modifier.

Max will give a warning when you go back in the object history before the edit mesh; just confirm that you want to do it (since you're not modifying the geometry in the history, there's no danger)

ok, Dan, I know I said 'good words' and all, but I'm a dolt... and where the heck do you find that UNWRAP UVW command? I can't find it with the uvw stuff or the edit menu. So..... um.... could I get you to point me to where it exists. Thanks.

In max 4, click on the modify tab, then scroll down the "Modifier List" menu until you get to the "UV Coordinate Modifiers" its the second one. In max 3, it'll be in the user manual, might be under a similar name.

darn, I have 3D Viz. I knew there were things that were turned off... I didn't think this was one of them... but I can't even find this in the help files. Oh well.... Thanks Dan!

That's about the best I can do right now. Not exactly about Unwrap UVW and things, but might give you an idea about such things and how they work.

If I remember correctly, they are plug-ins for Max 3.x that you have to download. You can get them (it) at 3D Cafe.

nope...MAX 3 comes with Unwrap UVW built in....Where as 3D Studio VIZ doesn't. Hmmm...a third party UVW unwrapper would work....Try TrU-V.

I don't have an address for it sorry.
