Actually, those are pretty good settings for focal blur. The only place I see artifacts is where there's light right against dark. Sometimes I just smooth these out with photoshop. I think this focal blur may be the smoothest I've ever really seen =)

I like the way it looks. Have you tried a camera angle that doesn't look straight down a row?

Also, you might try an area light for soft shadows.

(hint: since you can't see the shadows in the blurred areas very well, you don't need soft shadows anywhere but the places where there is no blurring. you can make your area_light a spotlight to light up just the non-blurred areas. Then, to light up everything else, add a regular point light in the same place. Of course, this will make the spot lighted areas twice as bright, so make another spotlight the same size and shape as the area light one, but don't make it an area light, and give it a color that's the *opposite* (negative) of the point light. This will exactly counter the point light's influence in that area, leaving only the area spot light lighting it. Just make sure the boundaries of the spot lights are in the focalblurred areas so that you can't see them.)

yes, there are some extremely annoying pixels in the middle. PS is a good idea!

meanwhile i already made a version with area lights (without your hint of course).
50K or so 1,5 hours rendertime

i'll try your hint with the spotlight later.

thanks for your feedback!

Yeah, kinda. I assumed they were on the surface, and couldn't get my eyes around the shadows.

And yeah, I use Max. With finalRender as my primary renderer atm.
