ok, i too modelled a basic spaceship.

is there a way too make the "window" in the front smoother? like a sphere?
and if so, is this done in wings (autosmooth) or povray?

When you exported to POV-Ray, did you export normal vectors? If you do that, it should be made smooth.

yes, ive exported the normals too, but i had to comment them out afterwards to get rid of that artifacts, i posted some time ago. (i used slimepov for rendering)

Oh, well, the normals are what actually create the smoothness.

Ooooh, wait. I think I know. Highlight all edges that are supposed to be "sharp" in Wings. Right click and select "hardness", and choose "hard".

That specifies that those edges should be considered sharp. If you "smooth" the object after doing that, even in Wings itself, those sides will remain sharp. And when you export to POV-Ray, you shouldn't experience the artifacts at all.

See, if you don't set the edges to 'hard', then it assumes that the object is supposed to be smooth, so it tries to fake smoothness on an object that's quite obviously not smooth at all. But by setting the edges to 'hard', it knows that those parts aren't *supposed* to be smooth, so it doesn't do anything weird with them.

So, set the sharp edges to "hard", and then export with normals, and don't comment out the normals.

You could use media for fire instead.

You could use media *based* on particles!

By the way. Are the ship hull and the little window two separate objects in wings? If so, you should consider remaking the window as part of the same model as the ship. Now that you've set those edges to be sharp, you can alter the flat surface of the ship, and create a rounded window there, and maybe make it inset a little into the ship, but the sharp edges will remain sharp.

yes, the cockpit is just a scaled sphere. and yes, it wasnt supposed to stay as it is anyways.

Ooh, nice. But the sharp edges aren't working for me. Even if you want them mostly sharp, a *little* roundness might increase realism.

Had the urge to try this myself (without POV-Ray...) after seeing this thread.
My first ship ever: (these renders don't do the details any justice)

I started with 3 sketches (top, left, front) on graph paper, scanned 'em in, and worked from there. I'm still working on it...
