I design webpages right now, and my brother is upgrading his computer so he is giving me his motherboard with 1GHZ processor. I will get this in a month or two, and I want to make this computer My server so I can host my own webpages from it. I was wondering if anybody knows where I can buy server space from for me to host websites from? Im a little new to servers, I will most likely put Linux as the OS (is Redhat the company that made Linux). And what software will I need to install on the server, so it wupports php, MySQL and all other common web languages? Any Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The most common solution is called LAMP, which stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. All of these can usually be downloaded or obtained for free.

If you're looking for hosting, check what Doc Ozone says should be the Preferred Hosting company of the Ozone Asylum, The RunningWolf Corporation.

I would just like to clarify that RedHat didn't make Linux, it's just one of the many available Linux distributions (i.e. there're also Mandrake Linux, SuSE Linux, Slackware Linux, etc.)

also, check with your ISP that you are allowed to run a server. in some cases you have to upgrade to some business plan to do this.

Pugzly - I've been to RunningWolf a few times... always just to find the splash graphic and no more...

Are you planning a site behind there sometime?

Sonicsnail -

Yes, actually we're working on the site when we have the spare time. It will include all the pricing, all the info, places to sign up and order, etc....

It's getting there, slowly....

Is there a website I can download LAMP for free??
And What is the latest version on Linux?
Another question, The motherboard of my new server has 2 - 500MHZ processors. Does Linux support dual processor motherboards?
Pugzly, How much would it cost for me to get server space from runningwolf?? and how large would it be with what features??

Yeah Dual processors is supported. (Linux has been ported to just about any hardware config you can imagine) It actually makes better use of dual-processor boards than many other OS's

The config that pugz mentioned is included by default in just about any Linux distro you choose.

I'd recommend putting together a home server just to get a good grasp on how they work and having a fully configurable home server so you can mess with anything you want, but use a hosting co. for your main site (I've been happily using runningwolf for about 2 years now for bitdamaged.com)

You can talk to Pugz about runningwolf.

On the LAMP stuff that's more an acronym for 4 seperate prods than an actual package.

What happens is that when you run the installer for any Linux distro it will give you the option to choose which packages you want to install. Both Mandrake and RH catagorize (in different ways) a couple of "bundles" of software (development, server, workstation etc. ) Which has a bunch of different software. You also have the ability to select specific packages within these bundles.

Not to mention once Linux is installed both have handy RPM tools that will allow you to add (or remove) any packages that didn't get installed originally.

Best bet is to just run the install and start poking around. It'll be confusing a little at first (such as the partioning questions with RH that still confuses me which is why I chose Mandrake) but It's a bit hard to answer these questions in a general sense. Try it out and if you have any more specific questions you know where to go!
