Hi, I was just wondering if there was anyway to setup my home computer, on the internet with an IP address for a webpage using Apache Tomcat or IIS for windows XP? On the internet as in I can type in my IP address from some place else and access it. I have a verizon DSL line and a D-Link DI-604 Router, Thanks....

if you have your own static IP, yes you can...

if you have a dynamic IP use software like http://www.no-ip.com/

just install the web server and access it via its ip address...

I setup no-ip the freebie addition, and I can't seem to get my website to work, the address leeand00.servehttp.com pings just fine, but it doesn't connect me to the website when I type it in the browser.

My guess so far would be that I need to setup the router to do some of that stuff,
I don't understand it, but there's something about a public port and a private port, and a private ip address, what's that all about?

if you have successfully installed a local webserver you should be able to surf to:
http://localhost/ and see some sort of "It Worked" page or the IIS documentation...

otherwise check and see if your webserver is installed and running

Ok, well I was talking to some guys on the IRC today, and they told me that the problem was that PPPoE and VPN were hiding my real IP address, because I'm behind Versizons gate way....is there anyway around this?

Hi Maskkkk,

Have you already opened up port 80 on your router firewall and pointed it to the internal IP of the PC running your web server? You should find that somewhere in the virtual server settings. And like lallous mentioned, are you able to browse locally using http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/ ?

Regards,
Charlie

Well, what about your router? Is port 80 opened up and pointing to the internal IP of the PC running Apache?

not only that... the ISP you use could have port 80 blocked
try setting up your web server on a non standard port like 3452
http://<web address>:3452/

and then.. if you use apache.. maybe your server.conf file is off.... been there done that..

Yeah my isp blocks ports like that to outgoing traffic, so i setup my server on port 100 for apache, and 101 for IIS. It works like a charm!

Hey Guess what! Today I accessed my webpage from college! And it even resided right here on my home computer! However for some reason it apears to only be able to load text and (*Squeses his fingers togeter*) very small images...

I bet it's because my router was cheap...
Or maybe because DSL is slower at uploading.....

any ideas?

If it's asynchronous DSL, then your upload speed is gonna be much slower.

if you're a home user you probably have asdl, I have the 1.5m service from swbell and the upload is capped at 150k.

You've not going to be able to serve up much with dsl at home, not to more than 1 or 2 users at a time anyhow.

JKMabry: You're capped at 150? - That sucks.
I'm capped at 256, which I thought sucked, but suddenly feel a little better :P

Maskkkk:For serving pages from a home computer, there shouldn't be a problem with even a 150 upload, unless you want to serve like 1,000 users at a time.
First question = Is your computer up to the task?

There are a couple of small considerations to make when running a server:

1: If possible, use a dedicaated computer for your server, and let it know it's a server.
If not, as soon as you try to use your processor for anything other that server stuff, it's gona fall flat on its arse. (You cn add an NIC and use the server as a gateway for your home network).

2: Add LOADS of RAM. (For a web server, go with AT LEAST 256mb)

3: Don't use iis.
For a home server, use apache or similar, it's bucket loads faster than iis and infinately more secure.
If you must use iis, it's best to use 2x processors (or more) and some form of raid configuration.

Ok I got 512MB of RAM....

I dunno if my computer know's its a server that's a good thing to check, is that like in Windows whenever you pick server from that box they have that says desktop computer and all of that?

I'm using Apache Tomcat....

I tried to access it down at college and it doesn't work, but from other peoples houses, it works fine.

Not only that occationally my sister runs imesh alot and I think that might slow it down a bit....
(she downloads alot!)
