Hi, I am looking to put together an image gallery very quickly and free - the gist of it needs to be user registration, image upload, auto thumbnails, multiple users, editable accounts, keyword indexing and search, and customisable templates (I have my own design which is similar to google's image search resuls in layout.)

Does anybody know of such free apps? maybe you have created similar and wish to share with me ?

Any help would be great, thanks a lot.

Couldn't really find much to suit my needs.

Stylewise I have my design, much like google images http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=ozone

So I'm looking for a library/gallery app that will produce pages like that (I can make the html no probs) just need the whole php backend, and obviously the mysql database with user accounts.

I know nobody will build it for me (would take ages I'm sure) but I'm hoping someone has seen something that produces similar results.

Thanks guys, help is always much appreciated,

Jon

Well, using the Grail as a basis (which would provide an ok template syttem, user registration, multiple users (o' cousrse ;-), a very simple rights system a search and so on),
I'd guess this, with your feature set
(image upload with automatic thumbnailing, allowing keyword index of said images (searchable they'd be automatically), adjusting of the user account system (you'd probably want to store something else than the grail does right now, using your site design, fixing all the usual gazillion html bugs...), to take no longer than a week's worth of work.

Breakdown Guestimation.:
Day One: Basic Image upload/display module, with thumbnail generation, allowing a free text, and using the grail's existing meta information system for the keywords and the like. (Provided we can dig up a more or less drop in thumbnail system. But this has been discussed even more than the usual 'do something with all files in folder' script around here).
Day Two: Write search display for images, rework search module to be able to print results in multiple columns (like google does), start changing header and footer and style with your templates.
Day Three: Finish up styling, adjust user account system to your wishes, remove modules you don't need (forums, archives, wiki, whatever).
Day Four: Fine tuning - there's always some to do.
Day Five: Delay collection day, or do you believe everything works smoothly all the time?

Not that I'd have that much free time en block right now..., nor would I work without compensation ;-).
Still, depending on how quickly you need it, and how much work you're willing to put into it, I'm certain a solution could be found.

So long,
TP

'the Grail' ? what is that? is it a real app or are you reffering to something else as a 'grail'?

well, the Grail is the software that's gonna power the new asylum... while the grail (note the lower case g) is the actual beta system that the software is currently running on.

Anyhow, the Grail is pretty open, so extending it to be an image gallery would be easy.

Hi again,

Tyberius - I looked at grail and at my current level of PHP knowledge (it's kinda like javascript with $ right?), I don't have any idea how I'd make it into an image gallery.

JKMabry - Thanks dude, I have already looked at that and dismissed it, but since you said it again I have taken another look and it will probably be nearly perfect, only thing is it has no support for movie files and since my main reason for putting a gallery together quickly is to create a place for my fellow student buddies to post all our photos (and mini movie clips - digital cameras are cool) of our recent New York trip it irks me.

Does anybody know how to include movies into coppermine? There is an ongoing discussion in their forum but it just says 'we aren't gonna do it coz we can't be arsed' - basically speaking. I appreciate free software is unlikely to ever be exactly what anyone is looking for but I would like to see that feature and was hoping it could be easily(ish) implemented. Is anyone here familiar with uploading and dispalying video files?

Thanks yet again people,

Jon
