I opened this one because the pspong? ][ thread was getting longish as it is, without the logo proposals mixed in.

so here is mine.

my proposed color scheme would be a light grey for the background (EFEFEF) and the light blue(7A93B5) for everything else :-)

I was thinking of using the photoshop 'grid' a a background for this site, it would seem to reinforce the Photoshop nature of this competition, and be pretty good for viewing images against, I'd think. Still no logo ideas floating through my head, stupid head, be creative, dammit!

OK, I just had a chat with taxon, and he was also thinking about the grid background. He mentioned an idea of maybe building the name in a wireframe, and letting it appear more and more developed as the text spelled out? (I'm not thinking animation here, but graphics, grid on one end, finished text on the other.) Maybe with some architecural style grid lines left in, to show the nature of the "work in progress"?

I was picturing another one, more of a cartoony feel, with a manic opponenet on the other side, lost in the perspective almost, and a flaming, psychedlic photoshopped "ball" flying straight at you, with the name worked in there somhow? Vague, but there's a hint of a picture in my head.

doc, I love the grid idea. and it would not distract from the images at all. (like a solid colored background would).

I'll see what I can do with the 'getting more definite' idea...

OK while we are throwing ideas in I'll mention the one I threw in which may have been lost somewhere in the other posts: the words PSPong with the vertical bars of the first P and the g being the bats and the o being the ball. It might be a little twee but if PS elements were thrown in too (grid, eye, etc.) it could draw the two parts together. I suspect there will be a need for a larger more detailed logo and a simpler one for link to us buttons so that also might be something to bear in mind.

I take this place is the place for ideas for PSpong.com then?

Doc your talking about a grid is that the grid style on This (the grid under the text I am referring to), because I think that is less distracting to the viewer of the site as the lines are small and don't stand out much on the page, than the Photoshop grid.

Well here goes I hope I don't get thrown out for my opinions on this ,

Also I was thinking about breaking into a clean style to it site, I mean by this breaking out of the style that all the other sites linked with this one (handson, gurusnetwork , etc). I say this because I think this type of style is getting old now and to me looks very factory driven type styles (All what tutorials can show you and no real creativity there as far as graphics go), I know this sounds wired from some one who has not been around long and have not been involved a lot, but I like to be different, unless the style you want is to fit in the rest on the sites linked with this, which is good as all the site will have the same sort of style to them, than Pspong.com being the odd one out as far as the style goes.

I can make some ideas on what I mean if you want?

Maybe I have express to much about how much I like graphics tutorials (which I don't like at all even though they do bringing a lot of traffic to sites who have them), but it is just my option, so I suppose I will be ejected out of this forum now because of my views on tutorials.

I will agree with Darkshadow. Both Hands-On and Guru is great sites, but kind of 'oldfashioned' if you understand..? A new look, clean lovely design, would probably attract more visitors too. But I know - it's always difficult to do something different and creative, but it's a lot of creative peoples around here isn't it?

DS: If you've got ideas for the type of layout you were thinking of then knock something up and start a new thread in this forum for ideas along this line ('PSPong.com layout proposals' to follow the theme).

I'm not clear what your concerns are over the design of GN and handson - a bit boxy perhaps? Boxy is so 1997!! Its worth noting that as both sites are aimed at people from beginners upwards it might be a good idea to stick with a more 'conventional' design as the more fancy your interface becomes the more people you confuse. Perhaps PSPong.com is aimed at a more 'sophisticated' audience and so a 'different' and 'creative' design might be in order - I would think that something 'familiar' might be more intuitive and easier o navigate but lets see those ideas (in a new thread).

Emp: you right about "fancy your interface becomes the more people you confuse" yea but I mean bring it up to date sort off, but in a way that it is not confusing for the beginners to the site. But I was thinking to make it simple yet has a up to date feel to it then handson, gurusnetwork , etc as they are a bit "Boxy" but they do there job as getting beginners involved.

I will make you ideas tonight if possible and start a new thread, if no one starts one before and see what other people say and ideas they throw in too about the layout and style

Any ideas on what links, content, etc there must be?

DS: You are never going to get thrown out of here for stating your opinion and esp. not when you are prepared to back it up with suggestions for design improvements!! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

As to content its all pretty much up for discussion expect the front page to have some links to:

1. The current active games

2. A links section

3. An admin section for the user to log in, upload their pics, change their preferences, etc.

4. Some link boxes back to here, GN, handson, etc.

5. A store, if its deemed a good idea (and we can get something working to automate the volume of stuff generated)

6. A kind of spectators gallery where they can view all the active games, and from their drop in and leave comments, etc.

7. FAQs - v. important (should have that higher up the list).

Aim for something like that and how probably won't go far wrong. I suspect the aim will be to get it automated using server side scripting so it will be updated without having to have anyone intervene too much and keep it light so it'll load quickly even for us dialup monkeys.

OK pos. a little too much to ask for but see what you make of that.

On PSpong.com I think it would be cool if there was a space for pspong matches that made logos for the site, then the best of all of those where selected and a random logo thing happened like on GurusNetwork. Just thinking that would be a good way to get some nice logos.

Other ideas?

Hmm...little bit too blatant I think. How about an actual logo, to make sure we set the brand?

After all, text treatments are nice, but they don't leave incredible lasting impressions. A real PSpong logo should be simple and accept any text treatment we really give to it.

After all, even the Guru's logo is just that word with a customized font work instead of existing fonts with treatments.

Here's the general idea of what I mean. We nail a logo that's symbolic of the game, the speed, the modern quality, and the fun of it.

Then we can do simplistic text work with if needed

Or deal with it as an integrated header on the site

(I'm actually working on something with the above basically in it)

Then we have an establishing brand that isn't dependent on fonts, but only on an EPS and imagination. That's my vote anyway, that we look to a good logo (not particularly this one) instead of text treatments that we've seen on action sites all over the net.

DG: I really like that logo - its got movement, a ball shape and some P shaped things. I think that something would really work well we need to think about how the logo will fit in with the layout and something that can be kept nice and small would keep the top area of the page good and short leaving more room for the actual meat of the site. Some to think about anyway.
