It's kinda... weird.

I fear I'm an ass at English, but what are the words "tech slop" supposed to mean, related to you or your sig ?

The whole effect is funny, but I think the sig "lacks" something.

Perhaps could you add some relief to the letters, or degrade the grey, or add color to the white mask ?

The whole sig look a bit too much rectangular in my opinion. I had another idea : why not kill the grey background, fill the letters with some texture and apply that "snowy mask" on it again ? I'm sure you saw at least one of those Sci-fi movies in which there are electric rays that go up on spines... Perhaps you could do the same with this effect ?

I am just suggesting... To be frank, I don't really know how to react about this sig... Something is lacking, but I don't know what.

Edit : stupid grammar and spelling.

Well the big gray box and monochrome theme is a turn off, but the effect has alota potential. I say use a cool font, some transparency, and turn the snowy mask into sometin' (like electricity). Just needs a little production value

Personally, I dig it esp the rising effect and having visited tech-slop (the website) I can see why WJ went with the gray/black/white as it maintains the colors on his site.... but Its a tard too big and boxy.

There's probably some neato-keen technique behind this, but right now I find it's pretty ugly...

Just some Snowy Mask. Nothing too special.

Background:
Random black and white strokes with a medium brush.
Gauss to taste.

Difference:
More random black and white strokes with a medium brush.
Gauss to taste.
Set mode to Difference.

Levels:
Adjustment Layer > Levels
Tweak to taste.

Then it's just a matter of cleaning it up and tweaking.
For animating, I moved the Difference layer around.

You can get all sorts of looks and feels.
For example, crawling electricity.
Or even flowing blobs.
Even more looks/feels that I can't begin to describe.
If you toss a photo into the mix, you can get electricity or something to crawl across across it.

BTW, I would never use that graphic as a sig. I was just in a goofy mood.

Interesting effect. I wonder if you could make a lightning storm sig with the lightning bolts interacting with your name...hmm...*wanders off to experiment*

Uh-oh.
I think I'm on to something.
Might be able to mix Mahjqa's fire and Snow Mask.

Okay, Snowy Mask gives one kind of look with Difference mode.
Mahjqa's fire gives a different kind of look with Colour Burn(?).
I think I found a way to mix the two for some superior crawling electricity effects.

mahjqa is too tired to do the transparency thing, or the talkie thing. mahjqa wishes you all goodnight. Nice stuff, War.

Yeah, I got lucky today. While the little one was napping, the older one went swimming over at the neighbors.

Basic idea:
The inside of the text (or whatever) is snowy mask. This is in a layer set and the layer set's blending mode is screen.
The outside of the text (or whatever) is Mahjqa's fire with a touch of Izzay's smoke variation. Also in a layer set.
Then you have to link two layers, one from each, and animate them.
If you do it just right, you get electricity flowing across the text (or whatever) and a real nice outside glow where the electricity touches the edges of the text (or whatever). Not only does it glow on the outside, but tiny little tentrils shoot out a little bit.

I want to go through it again from scratch before I get into the details.
But don't let that stop you from messing around.
When I do get to it, I'll probably toss up a PSD for ya'll to tear apart.
