who here archives old threads? I've done quite a bit of archiving for Doc several years ago. Is there a schedule or rotation or anything? I'd be glad to help again as I have some spare time on my hands these days...

I thought people were just jumping in when they had the time.
I've been prettly lazy as of late with the PS forum. Probably because I don't visit nearly as often.
*glances*

10 pages.... *sigh* (athough that's nothin' compared to the 46 pages in the ozone forum. *smirk* )
I'll be gettin on the PS stuff soon.
Mebbe tonight even.

Good reminder, even if it wasn't meant to be, heh.

I did some today and tend to do it when I spot old threads in the FAQ, etc.

Webshaman was doing a sterling effort but he isn't around as much at the moment and I think without him things have slipped rather. The New Asylum should help us make archiving a lot simpler.

I'd be happy to archive some of the old Ozone "furum" threads...

is there anyway to perform a batch archive instead of one page at a time?

Not yet :-(.
The new asylum will automatically move everything after a certain amount of inactivity into the bin, unless it has been preserved before that. In the bin, the posts can easily be preserved, and will then automagically move to the right archive.

So far the new bin is not going to be emptied ['till we run out of space, I guess]....

personally, I believe if a rtfm thread has been around for a couple of months, and the question has been answered, it's not worth archiving.

philosophical advice*:
Archive the stuff that appears again and again. Appear the stuff that's intersting, tells forum history, or seems significant. Archive 'hey, I'm new here posts' - people like coming back to those in their future. Don't archive threads without an answer.

*ie. take with appropriate amount of grains of salt.

In order to indicate the guilty: I have deleted rtfm threads when on an archiving spree.

The asylum currently weighs around 600mb. According to SturgeonsLaw 80-90% of that is crud. Plus, I have a two month old backup of the thingy (used for the grail import). I'll be doing a new backup sometime this weekend. So if it turns out that any one deleted the world formular, we're probably safe.

I was trying to keep up with the PS forum, but I`ve been offline for some time and I`m also working 7-12 hour shifts/week, driving 2hours/day, and even sleep some.
Prolly not be much help anytime soon.

...I think Doc is itchy about deleting 'current', 'recent', and 'important' threads.... if you're archiving the last page in the OZONE forum and you run across junk threads, go ahead and delete them...

I see archiving like this:

if (thread = usefull){
archive();
}else{
delete();
}

I think that when you're running through the tail end of a forum with your 'archiving' hat on, the thread shouldn't be left in the forum when you are done- either it's good, or it's bad, but it's certainly no longer active or relevant...

actually, I believe this should read

code:
if (thread.isUsefull())
{
thread.archive();
}
else
{
thread.delete();
}

if(thread.usefulness > 0.50f){
thread.archive();

thread.delete();
}

no, no no.
A thread's an object, and it has to decide itself if it's useful enough to be deleted.
You shouldn't have to do access its state and decide for yourself.
So the best call would probably be:
[code]
thread.firstLifeTimeEnded()

As I said - don't worry about archiving, the grail will make it easier, though you'll have to assign keywords to anything that actually is archived. (everything else will be moved to 'the sink' - there to rot till all eternity.).
Either way, anything that's older than 45 days will either be moved to the archive, or to the sink. (ie 45 days since the last post to a thread). Of course, threads can be 'rescued' from the sink simply by assigning a keyword - it will vanish next time the cleanup script goes around.

So, don't get yourself to hyped up about the archival, k?

Yeah InI, it's a ton of work, especially if one takes the time to actually read each thread...and the posts to it...to decide if it is worth archiving or not! Just getting a page a day done can be tough...I think I was doing like 4 pages a day...that meant coming home from work, and doing nothing else but archiving/deleting until crawling into bed...

TP - that's my question regarding the Grail - the actual "value" of the thread itself. Isn't that a subjective call? How is a computer program going to be able to decide, what is important enough to keep, and what is not? I'm mighty curious on this one...

the grail doesn't assign a value - you do. If you add a keyword to a thread, it's automatically moved to the appropriate archive when it's gotten to a certain age (without any new posts). If you don't add a keyword, it get's moved to the sink - where you can still add a keyword (which then get's it moved to the appropriate archive as well when the next nightly cleanup happens). Of course this is one bit more work than simply archiving something - you'll need to think up one or more keywords - but then, the actuall process for you is faster, since you don't have to choose every time again where to archive it to. And if you can't think of an appropriate keyword - it's probably not worth saving.
