Heh, not exactly philosophy, I guess, and not really silliness either...

Sushi. Do you like it? Dislike it?

I ask because my wife and I went out for dinner the other night. As usual, we didn't have any specific place in mind when we went out, we just kind of wandered around the neighborhood to see what would strike our fancy. We went down a side street and saw a tuna sushi place that we had never been to before.

It's really a Japanese style place, I guess, but with a Korean style. We sat at a bar and the sushi was set out in front of us on little wooden plates filled with jade (jade is eum, or yin, and thus has a cold energy--which helps keep the sushi cool). At first the owner put out about four pieces each of three or four different types, which I thought was a bit stingy. As I ate, though, he cut up some more and kept the plate full. I ordered a nice hot cup of jeongjong (sake), and the sushi kept coming. I kept wondering when he was going to stop, but I was afraid to ask. My wife finally asked, and he said, with a smile, "When you're full." At which point I thought, Oh my God, an all-you-can-eat sushi place! All the customers there are regulars, and now I know why. Oh, and it's not like those all-you-can-eat buffets you go to where the food is crap--this is top-quality stuff. Man, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

The funny thing was there was another foreigner there at the same time. We got to taking eventually, and this guy loves tuna sushi. He carries around a notebook filled with stuff he learns from the owners of these places. But he's a cool guy, and we're getting together to watch the Korea-U.S. match on the big screen by City Hall. That way it will only be ten million against two, rather than ten million against one .

Eh, anyway, that's some fine sushi they got going there. Any other sushi fans in the Asylum?

I like the "tame" kinds of sushi: California rolls, and anything with cooked meats on it. Eel is awesome as well as crab.

I just can't get up the nerve to try the raw stuff. I tried an oyster once and nearly puked, since then I just can't make myself do it.

Sushi is very tasty.

but I prefer sashimi, where I do not get all that rice'n'stuff, but more raw fish.

Incidently, my least favorite would be california rolls.
But then again, I just love oysters and prefer my steaks very rare

I forgot that sushi doesn't just mean raw fish (should've said sashimi). The Korean word is hoe (pronounced like "way" with an "h" in front, not like the garden tool), and it basically means any meat (not just fish) eaten raw. So that's what I was thinking of when I said "sushi."

Actually, tuna is considered the "tame" end of the raw fish spectrum. I heard Ming Tsai (somewhat famous chef in the US, if you're into that sort of thing; he's got a great restaurant in the suburbs of Boston that I visit whenever I'm in the area) once say that tuna sushi is "sushi for beginners." It doesn't have the same "slippery" taste as other raw fish, and it's eaten semi-frozen, so it's kind of like eating an ice pop. Just a raw fish ice pop.

Oysters are probably not a good way to ease yourself into the raw stuff. Talk about slippery.

Hey, while we're on the subject, how about octopus? Sometimes when I visit family in the Incheon area (where MacArthur landed in the Korean War) we go out and have octopus hoe. The first time I had it we went out with my wife's uncles. They would chop up the live (small) octopi and serve them with the tentacles still curling around. They would curl around your chopsticks and wave around in the air. It kind of reminded me of Mystery Mansion, actually. You had to stroke them several times with your chopsticks so they would stop squirming and you could actually eat them. This wasn't fresh enough for my wife's uncles, so they asked for the octopi to be brought out whole. They were sitting in a little bowl on the table, but one of them was not content to wait for death. He kept flopping out of the bowl and frantically squirming across the table. Then someone would grab it and throw it back in the bowl, at which point it would begin again. It was hysterical. As for the taste, I don't really remember. I do remember the tentacles squirming around in my mouth, though. Definitely not sushi for beginners.

[Edit: Nimraw, you snuck a post in while I was typing! Sounds like we have similar tastes, though. If you're ever in Seoul, let me know and I'll take you out for some good stuff. ]

I'd probably say I'm a sushi beginner, but I do love the stuff. Cali rolls, tuna...salmon eggs are good. (Those are the big pinkish ones, right?)

By the way, for anyone who has tried it and hated it, there is such a thing as bad sushi, just like there's such a thing as bad hot dogs. You've got to find a nice place.

Haven't had it since I moved back from California. Can't say Texas is exactly crawling with sushi places, although I'm sure I could find a few if I actually looked. Hey, you know what? I think the hibachi place downtown serves it...hmmm...

Sushi's alright. I prefer my meats and seafood cooked to a crisp, but occationally me and my girlfriend will go out for a bite to eat and I'll suggest something that still mooing. Its something I have to be in the mood for.

There was a real good sushi place we used to go to in Hawaii. I haven't been there in close to three years, but it was real good. Of course I think that has more to do with the atmosphere then it did with the actual food. Right there on the beach. Scrumptious.

I'm probably the most finiky person when it comes to food. If it doesn't feel (feel, not taste) good in my mouth, I'll gag tryng to swallow it. And if I've gagged on some bad food, I'll never touch it again, no matter how good people tell me it is.

That octopus story makes me want to retch... I saw it on Ripley's how they ate live octopus whole...yuck man.

I am a fan of sushi. Ill eat anything raw (that is SAFE, no pork or chicken). I remember being a little kid and eating an oyster... Yeah they are freaking huge when you are 6. My uncles dumped a little lemon juice to numb it and down the hatch it went, has to be the coolest thing I've ever done.

Dont get me wrong though, I am still hoping to get to Texas for that famous 72oz steak, rare please! I have uncles(same ones as in the oyster story, they moved) in Austin so hopefully I can hop on that steak soon.

I just love sushi, preferrable different kinds of fish and seafood. so far I havn't tried any kind that I didn't like. the only thing I'd stay away from is the japanese blowfish, the deadly kind , don't think they are allowed to serve that here though.

I could have sushi every day for lunch , you get full in a comfortable way compared to a big steak & fries which tends to make the afternoon "a bit" drowsy.

Downside is that sushi for lunch over here is about 20% more expensive than anything else (and lunching out here is not cheap...), about $10 for 10 pieces (3 kinds)...

Oysters I havn't tasted yet but octopus goes down nicely (dead, that is...).
All in all, I enjoy Asian food very much.

Wes is right--there is such a thing as bad sushi. It's that sort of thing that goes a long way to turning people off. You really do need to find a good place. In synax's case, though, I doubt even the best place would do.

WS: Is it that bad there? No Japanese restaurants at all? Never been up that far north in Germany...

DmS: You're right about the "comfortably full" part. That's one of the things I like about it. $10 for only 10 pieces? That is pretty steep. It can get pretty expensive here in Korea as well, which is why I was so psyched about this place we found.

Hah! I'll give you an example of how bad it is here...went to a chinese restaurant the other day...and asked if I could have chopsticks...they thought I was from another planet....and gathered around the table to see how one ate with chopsticks...amusing, if a bit sad...

As for Japanese, Thai, Vietnames...etc restaurants...there aren't any here...curse my 'luck'...

But very good Greek, Turkey and Italian restaurants...*shrugs*...don't know why...

SUSHI!!!!!

Man I love that stuff! My fiancee and I eat it at least once a week. It's not cheap here. You can expect to drop about $50.00 easily without drinks.

I love it all, Sushi, Sashimi everything. I love eel, tuna, salmon, whatever. The octopus and Squid I am not that fond of just because it is like chewing on a fishy football. I have eaten it a few times and just don't like it that well. I really like Uni which is Sea Urchin. Sounds kind of funky but if you can find it here it is really good. Spicy Tuna!!

One of the restaurants here that we frequent, the chef is REALLY cool and the waitress' are sexy We have gone there so much the chef always gives us some free rolls when we order.

Man, an all you can eat sushi bar! I don't know if I would get up out of my seat for a few hours.

God I'm hungry now! Think I will have to go get some sushi.

Sushi, sashimi, ama ebi(this deep fried shrimp that you eat the heads-their crunchy like potato chips), teriyaki beef and chicken- I love it all. The amazing thing about where I live is that we have a lot really good sushi places. Its probably because sushi is popular with the private jet crowd that comes to see the Masters.

I'll eat anything once to see what its like. In Guatemala I had a sampler of wild turkey, armadillo, venison, and tepesquintle (a large rodent). The armadillo looked like a chicken breast but was stringy and didn't have much flavor, the tepesquintle was dark greesy meat but very tasty, and the turkey and venison tasted like. . .well turkey and venison.

I've had sushimi once and sushi three times. I liked sushimi the time I had it. Of the 3 times I've had sushi I didn't like it once. One of the rolls had something that was really strong(not fishy strong) in it that I wasnt keen on and thats all I tasted afterwards. Its really expensive where I live too. I can get a pound of fresh flounder and fry it up for what I paid for a sushi meal.
