In your own personal opinion, what is the best computer game ever to be created, and why?

Im my own personal opinion, the best computer game ever to be created would have to be Homeworld. It has impressive graphics, a plot worthy of a Stephen Spielberg movie, and you can have huge, Star Wars-ish battles with up to 7 other people.

I'm insanely addicted to Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. It fits my style. There isn't anything better than a barbarian with two grandfather swords whirlwinding a path through a nest of carvers(kobolds basically.) It could only be better if their heads popped off and flew across the screen like in Rise of the Triad(first person shooter) Oh Yeah. ROTT... ROTT is fun...

Is Homeworld really that good? i've looked at it a few times but I'm still trepidatious about purchasing it. Maybe the box art just doesn't do it justice.

Those and Mario Kart 64.

Well in that case, it's Breakout and any of its many variants.
I'm not into the new stuff... I mean WarCraft was good and everything, but they all take too much of my obviously very precious time (he says as he posts on a web forum).

I can never pick just one when threads like this come up, so I'll categorize.

Classic arcade: Asteroids!!! Simple, focused, and intense.
First person shooter: Doom II It was the first one to have looking up and down and IMO it had all the components one needs in this category.
Real time strategy: StarCraft It was late in delivery but it has to be the tightest package with the most satisfying multiplayer action. It's playability lasted remarkably long compared to other similar games and is still good to this day.
Quest: I would have to pick Diablo. While the second one is awesome, it was really just a rehash of the first.

If I had to choose just one from the above list... ah! sorry, can't do it

I mostly agree with Genis on this one. Zelda 2 was great because of the end boss; he was mad fun to fight against. He was duplicated as a mini boss in Ocarina of Time, which was also very cool.

At the moment, I like Warcraft 3, even though I suck at it. One of my old favorites is also Star Tropics.

The original Tomb Raider was also very good; never played the sequels, though.

As for console games I love the classic Zelda games, the ones that came out for the Nintendo and the Super Nintendo. The new Zelda games have lost part of their charm in my opinion, I would much rather replay one of the old one. The gameboy version of Tetris is also a magnificent game, you can never get to much of it

My favourite computer game is at the moment either Diablo 2 or Warcraft 3. I suck at both, but it is fun anyway The RPGs from Interplay and Bioware (Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Fallout 1 & 2 and NWN) are all great as well, but after playing them through a coulpe of times they get boring...

Ultima 5 through 7... the first RPGs to make you feel like you're part of a world that doesn't exist solely to advance your own adventure. In virtually every RPG in existence, even today, you can barge into a guy's house at 3am (if the game has day and night at all) and start talking to him, and he'll immediately pipe up with something useful to your quest. Try that in Ultima 7 and he'll shoo you out of the house complaining that it's way too late for that shit. Come back to him during the day, and he'll just chat with you about his life; you have to really pry before he'll tell you anything that affects you directly. A hassle? Maybe. But also far more realistic and immersive. These are worlds that you can just wander around in, chatting with people and finding out how all their lives interlock (which they do).

I honestly can't understand why people don't keep making those games... probably because most gamers just want to click repetitively on zombies in randomly-generated dungeons and collect ever-more-powerful equipment (or "phat lewtz").

Ahh, FF Tactics... I must have played that game a dozen times through, and I still play it. Almost nothing compares to it as far as replay, but you really got to get into it, or it'll collect dust. I know, I've witnessed the horror

On that same note, I'm a pretty big fanboy of the old Koei series 'Romance Of The Three Kingdoms', namely parts 2 and 4 (3 was just... obscure for me). Yes indeed, I love that there series with a passion (no pun intended). Who dares to stand in the way of Liu Bei?

But this topic isn't about that, it's about computer games. In which case, I'd have to say that Fallout (well, both 1 and 2, never played Tactics) takes the cake there. As does Half Life, or moreover, the modifactions that come out for it. Counter-Strike was fun before it became 1337, and I stopped playing (read: beta 4). Day Of Defeat pretty much kicks more ass than anything else at the moment, but it too is following in the footsteps of it's fallen mod bretheren.

That and Dance With Intensity. No, no, Suho, that's pathetic!

CFB: Final Fantasy Tactics is far more than any other Final Fantasy in the series is, has been, or ever will be. Well, at least to us Stat-Sim fans, anyways. It isn't a normal RPG in the conventional sense, ala FF6/7/8/9 etc, more of a really huge involving game of chess, with a fantasy setting and thrown into an awesome storyline. In fact, it often reminds me of playing Tactics Ogre, if you ever played that.

It was different. It used the old school anime sprites that the older SNES Final Fantasies did, at least the same style of them. I can't say the battle systems , leveling etc is any better or worse than the other games in the FF series, because of the differences, which made it stand out, on it's own.

Just damned addicting, but then again, take a look at my other favs (Romance Series) and you'll easily understand why I liked it. The fans are generally based in the groups who highly regard the Strat Sim, and unless you can really get into it, you probably won't enjoy it all that much.

FFT is much, much different than the normal FF RPGs...in that it is a Tactical game...with a lot of elements of an RGP thrown in (The best FF story, IMHO...the almost endless variety, the hidden quests, the characters, etc.)

There is a huge following of the game...and it came out back in the late 80's...

For replay value, I've never encountered another game that has fesseled me so...one can literally play, and replay it again...

Strangely, it never seems to get boring...because of all the different things there is to do, and try. I still play it...it just gets under your skin, and stays...

There are just hundreds of different ways to play it...

And yes, FFT is my favorite console game of all time. PC: Ultima 5 and 7 (with Deux Ex and Star Control 2 being close runners-up); console: Final Fantasy Tactics; arcade: sort of a tie between the entire Street Fighter series and the entire King of Fighters series.

Although that wasn't my all time favourite. My favourite games were from the early 486 era, I think this is when many gameplay genres hit their peak, with the exception of 3D action titles...

Stunts & Death Track (there were actualy 386 games but eh...)

Master Of Magic
Mech Warrior II (Mech warrior I was pertty good as well but #II all but took over several of my teen years )

My favourite 3D titles form the early 3D gaming period (1995 - 1998) mostly PSX games:
Wipeout, err all of em!
Tekken III
Tenchu
Bushido Blade
Tocca II
Grand Turismo I & II
Rainbox Six
Mech Warrior III

Currently playing:
Rogue Spear
Ghost Recon + expansion packs
Mech Warrior IV

I liked many of the games people mentioned already... Rather than repeating, I'll try bringing some new ones up...

Has anybody played Jet Moto? They're PSX Games. I think those were great games. However, the third one was made when people from Sony separated into their own business... I believe they were the ones that made Twisted Metal, also... I believe sony kept that title, though. They ruined both lines from what I've seen and played.. [both Sony and 989]

Jet Moto 1 was really fun. Jet Moto 2 is fun, too, but I haven't played it as much, yet. I don't think that Jet Moto 3 is as good. It was made by 989... In them, you ride hovering, rocket-propelled motorcycles though lots of different 'real-world' courses... It seems like a pretty cliche idea, but it's actually very fun. The world is set in a futuristic setting.. It seems that water levels have risen and driven back civilization. There are broken highways in the ocean that you can ride across and also use as ramps... The course are creative and the game is just fun. You can choose bikes with different max speeds, acceleration, handling, and weight. Weight allows you to knock people off their bikes easier, but you can do that with a normal bike at high speeds, such as with turbo, or if you manage to aim well and run your bike right into them. It's probably my favorite racing game/series.

I remember playing Rocket Jockey, which is a similar type of game by a different developer, and it's a PC game. It's very old. You ride hovering, rocket cycles around, again, but the points are much different.. There are some racing stages, but often it's more important to trash the other people's cycles. You have a grapple line.. Jet Moto has something like that, but it's a magnetic grapple, rather than a grapple with a physical line. You can use the line as a clothesline to knock others off of their bike, grab onto things to make quick turns [including other people's bikes], or if you can aim well, you can grab other people's bikes and pull them along, even pulling parts of their bikes off [like small stabilizing "wings"].. You can also grab onto the riders, pull them off, and drag them around... when your line lets go [sometimes taking something like their underwear along with it] they have to get back to their bike... While still avoiding ramming and dragging from other cyclists. I thought it was fun then, at least... I haven't played it in years.

I think that Star Trek Armada 1 and 2 are great, computer, real-time strategy games. You'll probably enjoy it more, especially when you consider the history, what's going on, who/what the Borg are, conflicts between the different species, and etc. if you are at least a little fan of the Star Trek universe. Still, I think it's a very fun game. There are many species with many of their own ships.. and there's even a few ships of different species that aren't any of the main ones that you can select.. Ferengi, Breen, Dominion... Each ship and station has it's own shields, weapons, etc. that can be damaged or go down and need to be repaired.. The crews constantly repair any damage, and certain species are better at repairs, like the Borg, while others, like Klingons, are better at boarding attacks [the Borg are good at that, too, though...]... Did I mention that each ship has it's own crew? If something loses it's crew, either because of attack, poisonous nebula, a special attack from the enemy or whatever... crew can be transported over to it and they can then take control of that ship or station. Most ships have at least one special attack that they can do.. the Defiant can drop mines that are drawn to enemy ships.. the Borg Cube has a holding beam which stops ships from getting away while transporting drones aboard [which takes away from the enemy's crew, but also from the Cube's high crew.] I think I've gone into enough about that game, already...

It doesn't seem that many people have played this SNES game, but I think it's rather fun. It's not the hardest RPG, and it's not the longest or the one with the most sidequests, but I think it's still very fun to play... Mario RPG. Don't let the name Mario fool you.. though it is based on Mario, it's quite an RPG. It was made by Squaresoft, even. It has a tilted 3Dish display which is neat.. It looks very good for a SNES game. It lets you run around, jump, and such.. which is a fun level of interaction. You don't just walk around and push Action everywhere.. It's just a good, fun game, especially for kids.. an introduction to RPGs, maybe? I played it a little while ago, and though I'm much better at it, now, I still found it to be a fun and goofy game.

Vagrant Story [PSX] was a neat game.. I kind of wish that it was more active or more 'RPG', but it's still a good game, I think. The story and the visuals are great, I think. The graphics aren't state of the art, but everything is designed very well, and the camera angles in sequences are done well. I still think that the "talk" bubbles are creative, nifty, and well done.

I mentioned Twisted Metal [PSX] earlier, but I think that Vigilante 8 [PSX] is a better car battle game. Car battle games aren't really my favorite, though. So I won't get much more into that. It had some neat, creative weapons, and neat, big courses [for PSX]... and every weapon had a couple "specials" that you could do with certain key combos. Okay, moving on..
Age of Empires II [PC] is a very fun RTS. If you like Medieval things and RTS, you'll probably like this game. Getting resources can be rather hard, but that is true for most RTS games without resource maps or cheat codes..
Red Alert 2 [PC] was a fun games, but it seems to lose it's value if you overplay it.. I guess that's true with virtually and RTS, though.
The Rainbow Six [PC] series is fun, though I have not played any of them all that much.

Time Crisis 1 and 2 [Arcade and PS1/2] were fun games.. when you memorize them or just play them too much, they get boring. Same for House of the Dead. They're fun shooters, anyways.. I haven't been to an arcade in a while, though.
Galaga is fun to me... It's rather straight-forward, simple, and abnormally addicting.
Goldeneye 007 [N64] was fun at the time, and so were older FPSs [already mentioned].
I would name some, but those have already been mentioned.. FF & FFT.. Zelda, Homeworld, Civilization.. and more...

Mario games are just fun, in my opinion. Even the weird and silly idea of the Sunshine one doesn't matter much to me, because it's just such a fun game. It seems easy to get lost in it, though. I've only played it for a few hours..
I think that Grand Theft Auto 2 [PC] is fun.. I doubt that most people take it seriously.

Oh man, I've gone on far too much.. I'll stop here... I obviously can't decide on a "favorite" game. *sigh*
