I think it's pretty cool stuff, but the article doesn't quite give enough information. Anyone else think it's just clever photography, or the first step to personal cloaking devices?

You know, I'm looking at those three guys behind the cloak. Then I look at where their feet are, and I trace with my eyes from there over to the right. Right there is the bottom step of a staircase. The stairs are about 2 inches tall. There are three of them. I'm looking at the top of the top stair, and I trace my eyes back to the left. It lines up with the midsections of the three people. I'm thinking: bad proportions. Photoshop.

The shadows of the people stop at the edge of the cloak and don't appear to the left of it.

The lines on the edge of the street behind the cloak and to the side of it don't match up.

One might argue that the cloak simply isn't very accurate in replicating the image behind it. To that I reply, why isn't the image behind it wavy?

Definitely a fake.

it sounds believable, when you read what it is actually claiming.

basically, it's alightly advanced, 'reverse' bluescreen technology.

quote:
The photograph was taken through a viewfinder that uses a combination of moving images taken behind the wearer to give a transparent effect.

the jacket isn't all that special - it's the viewfinder. Basically, it sounds like it captures what is behind the bluescreen (whether this 'screen' is a blue jacket, surgeon's glove, or otherwise), and whenever the blue image covers that area, it reloads whatever it's latest saved image was for that piece.

it could really only be useful in areas where there is a lot of movement - if a surgeon's glove constantly covers one area, then the image shown for that space will slowly get older and older, and could flood with blood, or whatever, and not be shown on the viewfinder. If, however, the gloves were constantly moving, the whole image area could be easily updated - almost a live image.

personally, i think that any advantages such a viewfinder could give in 'hiding' hands would not be worth the sacrifice in potential danger, and loss of normal, 3d-vision of the subject.

I agree, the whole thing looks very photoshop-ish, but that doesnt make it fake. Disproportions could be the result of refraction or whatever other imprecisions and optical effects such "technology" might inhibit. But I guess if you're really curious about the subject, a smart thing to do would be to contact the tokyo univ. directly, because even though this particular topic made cnn about 4-5 months ago, it does not give it any more credibility than the picture itself.

Just to let you all know, ananova is full of shit. Every single one of those stories, and I mean every one, is made up. Just have a look around, you'll notice hardly anything is believable and none of them are any longer than a page in report. It's all a scam.

oh! it's real!!! i watched it on the news awhile back when they were testing it. they were saying that it had a long way to go but that it was a definate step in the right direction. when they were testing it...there was like this projector thingy that was projecting the image of what was behind the person onto the front of the coat and visversa...
obviously, there's loads of wires and such running from the coat to the control thingy....that's not in this picture.
can't say weather that particular pic is 100%.....but i do know that the project is...and it looks similar to that.

anyways...it's cool

As for the implications of this, I would imagine that governments would take steps to outlaw personal cloaking devices once the technology became feasible. Can you imagine the havoc caused by a bunch of invisible people walking around?

And if a true cloaking device is ever developed, it will be done by the military, not the private sector. I think we have a long way to go, though, before we see real cloaking devices (like in Star Trek).

Implications aside... that sounds like a cool way to have a change of clothes in an instant.

"Oops... I forgot my formal lunch" *beep beep* instant suit. "beach party!!" *beep beep* bikini. Hell.. maybe it will even do away with computer monitors... we'll just view photoshop on our lapel

Suho ? I don't see why private sector couldn't come up with anything first. Many of the things used by the military were invented by private corporations... and many of them worked so well they've been banned. At least in America.

Thats rubbish compared to the current level of stealth technology. I've just received this from a secret source which really shows how advanced these things have become. That jpg will self-destruct in 5...4...3...

I saw this on tv, it only works with a special camera, it's not like the jacket is actually see through, it's just the camera. I am sort of busy so I didn't read any of the other posts, but I hope this is helpful.

MindBender: Well, first of all, I don't think the private sector would have as much freedom to develop this sort of technology (as you mentioned). Secondly, I don't think they would have as much to gain as the military.

For that matter, many of the things used by private corporations were invented by the military.

The military has been known to let the private sector develop technologies like this, because private developers aren't necessarily limited in funding like a federal program is. Then, once it gets good and almost there, the military steps in and takes over the project. (With an appropriate payoff to the private developer of course!) I wouldn't be at all surprised if they allowed this to develop further and then all of a sudden, it goes away... 5 years later, we'll hear about how the military is testing this new technology...

Pretty dang cool idea though!

The two names that come to mind right off in the private sector are DOW and Lockheed. AKA Napalm and SR-71 Blackbird. A couple of the oft used military standby's that were invented by private sector technologies.

Right MB but they were developed by private comanies expressly FOR the military. The blackbird was anyway. It isn't uncommon for the military to farm out jobs to private corporations and pick the best design. Just because it's a private company doesn't mean it'll hit the private sector soon, or ever.

Do you have an SR-71 Blackbird in your garage? I didn't think so.
