I read these news reports and it sounds like a load of BS to me but it appears a new book allegies that Stalin tried to kill John Wayne:
www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,1010076,00.html
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3114963.stm

There was so much Cold War propoganda floating around I'm suprised we have any idea of things that actually happened back then

This just sounds so unlikely (from the Guardian link above):

quote:
Wayne then relied upon a group of loyal stuntmen who infiltrated communist cells in America and learned of plots to kill him.

"He then gathered all the stuntmen, went to the communist meetings, and had a huge fight," Mr Munn said. This was when Wayne believes Mr Canutt saved his life.

The poster has demanded we remove all his contributions, less he takes legal action.
We have done so.
Now Tyberius Prime expects him to start complaining that we removed his 'free speech' since this message will replace all of his posts, past and future.
Don't follow his example - seek real life help first.

While this guy seems particularly 'gossip column-y', I don't have a hard time beleiveg that such plots or orders would have existed.

John Wayne was such a huge american icon that it's easy to see him being targeted, particularly by someone like Stalin.

Probably would have been more devestating to the public as a whole than killing the president....

Why bother? Like DL said, he was (and still is for some people) a huge American icon.
Talk about demoralizing and a blow to the American ego.

At that time (and for a long time after) John Wayne was a HUGE influence on the american public. His characters (and by proxy, him) were the type of men that manhodd was judged by for a great many people.

Regardless of his poor acting skills, he was of major symbolic importance.

Why *wouldn't* someone like Stalin want to take down the biggest living symbol of his enemy...?

Back then growing up with John Wayne movies, I didn't realize how much impact he had on people as a American movie hero.
Today, there is a day on cable devoted to John Wayne movies.
Today, I woke up to see "Angel and the Bad Man". One of my favorites other than "The Quite Man". And what about, The Searchers, or El Dorado, etc. Gosh, too many good ones. I like them all. It seems like today, he is still in the hearts of many people. My husband ordered his biorgaphy, has a medallion of his and just about owns all his movies on VHS or DVD. He also bought a picture of him at a flea market and wanted to hang it up in our bedroom. I drew the line there. But for myself I have always liked John Wayne. And what about Hatari. Good one too.
