I'm working on a 20-60 minute presentation on Thoreau's life, with an Analysis of Walden and Civil Disobedience in it for AP Lit.

I heard from several people that while Thoreau lived at Walden pond, he had his mother there to cook and clean and etcetera for him.

I searched the internet, but couldn't find any referance to this.

So, can anyone verify this, or point me to somewhere that can?

Thanks in advance.

First of all, what are you doing with a quick question in the Philosophy section?

Secondly, I have also never heard such a thing. The reason I have never heard such a thing is that I was part of Thoreau's housekeeping staff while he was at Walden--he needed intensive shock therapy to bring him out of his frequent drug-induced stupors. I can say with certainty that his mother did not cook and clean for him, although she did occasionally stop by to berate him for hours on end. Quite entertaining, it was. Lacuna was in charge of foot massages, so she can back me up on this.

I don't think I ever realized just how much I missed this forum...

I did, and the search came up fruitless.

I decided that it must of had some merit, because one was a colledge English professer, and the other was his assistant.

Hmmm...

Well, it was worth a shot.

An English professor and his assistant ought to be able to provide you with documentation for such a claim...

If you still have contact with them, you might just ask about it... If they really believe that, they had to get it from somewhere...

Did I mention that Lacuna was on LSD the whole time we were there?

On a more serious note...

You'd be amazed at some of the crap college professors come up with. Really. I'm not saying that it's not true, of course. I'm saying that it doesn't necessarily have merit simply because a college professor said it.

I'm now studying for my Ph.D., and the more I study the more I realize I don't know. The closer I get to actually becoming a college professor, the less awe in which I hold the profession. I know some great professors that I really respect a lot, but I also know a few crackpots...

My advice for you is take everything you hear with a grain of salt, and put everything to the test--never believe something just because an "authority" said it. That seems to be what you're doing here, so you should be well on your way to becoming a healthy intellectual.

Oh?

What you need to understand is that, unlike most of the people here, Lacuna and I are fully aware of the twisted little acts that you commit all alone in the dark in the middle of the night - for which you use the term "shock therapy session" as a euphemism...

Yeah, and there's a reason you and Lacuna know about these things... but I wouldn't want to ruin your pristine reputation here, so I'll say now more...

OK you three back to your cells and have one of these pills (white with little silvery bits in).

cfb: As Suho has said the more you know the more you come to realise:

1. That you know less than you thought.

2. That things are rarely black and white.

If someone states something with certainty and it is a rhetorical technique then they'd better be able to back that up with some serious evidence.
