I find myself needing a print package and I've heard some really good things about Adobe InDesign recently. Any opinons out there on it vs Quark?

I expect opposition, but I prefer even Adobe PageMaker 6.5 to Quark 4.1. Those two programs are about the same age (about four years old), and although PageMaker has a few interface quirks to learn, it's also more intuitive in many ways, since it shares an interface with the other Adobe products. Furthermore, it has a few very basic functions that Quark lacks. Can you imagine doing any kind of layout without the ability to drag-clone something? Do you want to do without the ability to paste a clipboard item back into the exact position you copied it from (e.g. to move an item from one page to another)? Then by all means, Quark away.

Quark is the industry standard, but there's no special reason for it to be. Trust me, a large part of my work is in Quark, and although I've come to respect its power, I've come to hate its flaws.

Anybody know anything about InDesign? Anybody feel like defending old Quark?

As far as I know, both Quark and PageMaker let you define process and spot colors for your document color space, and they let you print specific plates at your option (including full separations). Were you talking about something more?

I recently attended an InDesign (version2) seminar and I found the new version very impressive. I've used Quark, PageMaker and InDesign1. Fig, as a photoshop user, I think you will be much happier with ID and have an easier time learning it.

Me Again?

I wont defend anything but since I work mainly in quark, well...

About the clipping thing you can go into duplicate and repeat and put horizontal and vertical to zero and the next time you duplicate by comman+d your duplicated object shows up at the exact same spot.
The worst with quark is the pentool, it really sucks...

For me, the biggest advantage InDesign has, is that is has the same interface with illustrator and ps. Quickkeys gives me headache sometimes. Most annoying is the quickie to the hand tool, alt in Quark and spacebar in quark...

But, It´s all a matter of habit I guess. I use Quark because I trust it, what I deliver for the press is close to 100%, and Im too old to change

Our prepressdep. is not happy with InDesign, really havent asked why, but I will...

Sincerely yours
Tommy
