I have been a freelance web designer for the past 2 years. Recently I began taking a basic graphic design class in New York City and my instructor suggested we look into three magazines:

1. Communication Arts
2. Print
3. How

A few days ago I looked thru each of them but couldn't figure out how they were different with regards to content ( being geared to a specific target audience). Does anyone have experience with these publications and can give me an one sentence description of each magazine? They are pretty expensive so I would like to learn more about each mag prior to purchasing them.

Thanks.

I can't give you a complete overviwe of each as i don't read Print and Comm Arts as often, but i will say that How is only one of the them i consistently pick up every month. It seems to have more practical knowledge in it, lots of articles about the business/career side of design as well as about designers, firms, etc. Definitely my recommendation of the three...

Like Fig, I rarely pick-up communication arts and Print. Once in a great while just to keep a up what what's trendy but they are mostly fluff. They are Coffee table and waiting room fair. Good for Ideas and looking cool at the coffee shop but of little value otherwise. They often do special issues, more expensive yet more useful.

I like HOW and Step by Step Graphics. They are more geared towards the biz side of things. Useful articals, reviews and Tips. This months has a nice articals on the top young designers and type issue. PEI is also useful for learing the Photographic and Electronic imaging side.

The bad thing is you are paying 10 + dollars and getting maybe 20 pages of info the rest are useless paper ads and slip cards that fall out making a mess.
