I'm drafting an offer for a potential client that plans to collect info through the web (like the classifieds) that will be posted on the web, however an option for the customer should be to order "publish the ad in the paper" as well.

One requirement from the client is that everything that should go "in the paper" must be "quark-tagged" since it will land in quark express as a step in the publishing process.

Now, I've been googling on "quark tags" but all I can find is snippets and discussion on how to create HTML from Quark which is "sort of" helpful. What I'd really like is a reference list on all the tags and how they are used.

Naturally I've searched quark.com but came up dry, anyone know where to find it?

I'm confused. What do you mean by "tag". Do you mean a file suffix like "logo.qxd"?

Will I don't think Quark releases it's file formats SDK if thats what you are looking for?

If you are looking to import XML tag data into Quark and have access to it on the mac. One could use AppleScript to parse a textfile or access another AppleScript aware application to parse the data, create text and picture boxes and place content or one could create a template in Quark and fed the data into the template. It seemed to work ok for me when I create an image import script from or Asset Managemnet software. If you happen to be using Filemaker Pro you have got it made as it has a great scripting backend.

The Quark applescript documentation on the main cd on applescipt worth a look see, it may also be on quark website someplace. It is a litte cryptic, as Quark never seems to make things simple.

As far as I know Quark doesn't import XML but I did find this link to a plug-in that maybe useful.

what do I mean...
something like this: http://www.paneris.co.uk/partners/context/DXpress/quark_tags.shtml
(it's old and outdated)
It's a similar principle as html/css in a style sheet, you can tag content and quark renders it accordingly.

I need to know what tags there are, and how they work since the content will be in a mysql-db, and the admin of the site should be able to select a couple of ads and extract them formatted with "quark tags"... done by php.
I'll search some more, I might be able to get a template from the customer later on.
Thanx/Dan

That is weird, I've used Quark for 8 years and not heard of that before. Looks similar to the codes used for old IMS typesetters. My guess is you would only find codes for fomating type and not placement of the type or graphics. I looks like it is use to speed up formating outside of for newpapers workflows, similar to the old typesetter workflows.

Now you've done it. Now I have to find out more. Back to searching.

Well I did find something on Quarks site, as far a I can tell you need the Quark 4 plug-in Quark Tags from Quark's site, there is a PDF document discribing it's use along with the plug-in. I don't know it it was incorporated into the 5.0 or not. I don't have 5.0 to try. My guess is they what to make you by QuarkCopyDesk SE or some other product.

Try this document and plug-in:

I'm saved...
I've had another talk with the client and it turns out that they already do this in some places so they will be able to provide an up to date list together with full instructions on how to use them. Phew...
Thanx!
