Just playing around with some CSS.....thanks to pugzly for a little inspiration.

It's just a little mock-up tidbit, not a real site or anything.....but I thought it was cool
http://kublai_khan.tripod.com/dagnabit/slide.html

{{edit}} btw - I don't know exactly what this will do to older browsers, but I'm sure it's not pretty....there is no attempt to support them

Oh. OK.

Well I didn't say it was art.....but bevels....shadows......things that are graphical elements........no?

anyway...like I said, just playing and thought it was cool.

And like I said, I made no attempt to make it work in NN4x....

Works like a champ in NN6.0.

Nice work DL. It might not be an indepth graphic button, but it does have elements of a graphic (as you've mentioned) Fast load time, and looks cool. Could easily be mistaken for a nice graphic. I like it.

What browser are you using sash?

I have only tested it in IE 5+5.5 so far (with the recent re-install I had to do, all other browsers are gone from my computer at the moment...)

Graphics can only be interpreted as a visual entity......this being visual, must be a graphic.

Nice job DL.......

NN4.76 wont render that code correctly, hence your problems.

Thanks Phil, and thanks jestah.

Sash - don't know what to tell you.....I don't know of any reason why that would be the case . If you can (or anyone else) can possibly shed some light on why this might be, I'll do what I can to remedy it. Aside from it being hosted on tripod of course....

Anyway, for anyone who can't see it - I just used some CSS to create a series of divs with borders specified to give the illusion of beveled edges, properly aligned to appear to be a rectangular object with indented 'tracks' containing protruding buttons. When you mouse over the 'buttons' they slide to the right by a centimeter or so. And I used another <div> to make a simple drop shadow behind the whole deal.
Nothing particularly earth shattering of course...but just some neat effects demonstrating the power of CSS. Graphics wihout graphics......even if Max doesn't classify them as graphics

It's there, on w2k IE5 even. You just gotta get lucky mebbe?

Really nice Mr 44. I don't dig the 'slide' as much as just a 'depressed, border/background swap' but it is much more original. Really sharp and lightning fast load, even with the Tripod popper.

I have no idea why someof you can't access it....ah well...I'll be getting a real server before too long

Anyway, at the special request of JK...I added a standard 'pushed' button as well http://kublai_khan.tripod.com/dagnabit/slide.html

It's acheived by reversing the borders, darking the bgcolor, and increasing the right and top padding by a pixel or so on the mouseover

Fun stuff - and I must reiterate: grpahics. Yes, graphics. Not artwork...but graphics.

That should really p*ss you off that any NS screws with it a bit since it's lovely in IE. I HATE that kinda crap. Dagnabit must be code for NS workaround lab

drac, both of us are behind squid servers, thats *probably* why we cant see it. its because underscores arent supposed to be legal in DNS. the link below should work. i also have an old tripod account with an underscore in the name.

nice work.
tidy.

and i really like the conept myself.
its just something that really shouldve been a part of browsers for a while.
WHY should we have to make a graphic of text, just so we can make it change color when the mouse goes over it?
etc etc etc... hopefully, as all these problems are solved by newer version browsers, people will adopt them.

If we're talking about the code that created it, I'm afraid the trend has already started.........and anyway, not everyone bows to Flash........

phil - shut up until you know what you are talking about.
there is no way that the crazy notion of using real text to represent text would ever take off.

Yes - good god man...it's CSS. It already has taken off...people just haven't started to tap into the 'graphical' power of it yet...seeing as it's not supported by NN4x at all, and some other browsers are a little sketchy still.

And of course, it's not going to take off for graphics-driven personal sites...but for business driven sites, the potential is very promising. There are many sites out there NOW that use images to represent this exact type of graphic effect - so the ability to do it without images will be an extremely useful tool.
Without the need for people to download plugins and wait through horrific loading sequences to view it

Pretty clean DL! One thing I noticed is when I select the text in the right box, the text on the "buttons" is selected also. That's ok, but when I deselect the right box, the buttons stay selected! Curious, no?

countryboy - somewhere on tripod you are given the option between in-line ad banners, or pop-up. I chose pop-up. They are annoying, but they leave your page uncluttered.
