Hello all...newbie with my first post and first question:

For the last 6 months I have been using photoshop in depth...although I am new to the program, (and web design...for that matter) I would like to learn techniques that could take me beyond the average web tutorial. I am really looking to move into the web design and implementation field professionally and am trying to take my skills to the next level.

So...does anyone have any good references or advice for me in my situation?

P.S.
I will soon be posting my first web-site in the site reviews section so that you can get an idea of where I am at.

Until then, thanks in advance...

6 months? Man, that's a long time! But frankly, you're gonna have to give people more clues about where you're at than just "6 months..." :-)

I've learned by the mop-in-the-face technique... Post something, stand back and be branded-

Post a page, get feedback, and, VERY IMPORTANTLY, look at the site(s) of the person giving you the feedback - Usually that gives a clue about what to do next, if you know what I mean.

If something you do gets slammed, don't run away. There's usually a LOT of truth in constructive criticism, although it might be hard to "see".

Anyway, the next level for me is getting some formal art training. Perspective and shading and freehand.

I reiterate... Post a site, image, whatever, and people will be able to help you more.

Wow, kevin, "mop-in-face"? Considering where that mop usually goes I'd either consider very lucky or very not.

Phortay, welcome to the Asylum. Hope you enjoy your stay and don't mind the loonies.

Like kevin said, the only way to learn how to ride a bike is to fall off a few times. Unless you're twitch, who jumped straight out of the womb with all the necessary skills but had to wait until he was potty trained for anyone to take him seriously.

Enjoy.

Twitch is potty trained?

Phortay, another important obstacle is developing your own style. You can pound out tutorials all day long but if your design doesn't have that edge or uniqueness(sp?), it will rarely get a second glance.

The Guru Network is a great place to start if you haven't already been there.

Just tell me where you got branded, and what yours says!

Oh - hi phortay. Hey - is that "phortay" as in a loud musical passage, or "phortay" as in something you do especially well? Just want to be sure I usel it correctly in conversation.

well well well...such a nice welcome...

*phortay pulls his head out of a thick manual entitled "How to grow warts for profit!"*

it is probably the last nice things you will say to me...as I have been an asylum voyeur for some time now.

*phortay snickers and grabs a black pill*

Thank you all for your graciousness...I apologize for the lack of detail...but I will post a site for critique later this week.
'All Things In Time'

Oh...and thank you KevinCar...I appreciate your advice...I have seen one of your site reviews...and will apply the advice accordingly! And to you steve...you are the first person to guess correctly...Loud musical passages are my specialty!

Alas...I must go...I have a pressing game of 'Life' to play. Thanx again!

Adieu

bunchapixels says: sometimes, TFM is a good place to go!
and i would class some of the tutorials over at gurusnetwork as both advanced and professional.
and if you know this stuff already, then write them a tut!
