Preserved Topic: why are I-frames so unloved? (Page 1 of 1)

Seems to me like nobody likes I-frames these days but I love 'em. I hear that support for them is dying out. Is this true? I ask because it may effect whether or not I use them on my site. Thanks

rts5446: I'm not sure about unloved just misused (in a number of ways). They are a very powerful and useful tool but they are often used when they aren't required or where no provision is made for those browsers that don't support it. When used right they can do some amazing things. Just remember:

1. No content will show up at all in browsers like NS4.x (very bad).

2. You can't use script to them in Op6 (hmm poorly explained I think) - which means some of your fancy JavaScripts won't work (bad).

They can also be used maliciously (I've been attacked via one) and this kind of thing will get more serious over time and more people with iframe compatible browsers will disable support for them (if they can).

So use them by all means but use them wisely.

Let me just clarify this <IFRAME> & Opera issue. Iframes are not exposed to scripting, and therefore you can't use JavaScript to dynamically change URL that they're pointing to (which is used a lot when someone uses iframes to organize web site).

mr.maX: Thanks for the clarification (my explanation was a little poor - it was late!!).

Some scripts employ iframes to try for a crossbrowser iframe-like effect like:

but it doesn't work in Opera as explained here:
