Preserved Topic: Hey, can I do this?

When I bought this CS (chicken-&#$%) computer it came with a 12GB HD. Some time ago, after many systems crashes, I lost the full 12 GB capacity of my HD. The current install of Win98 only sees 2GB of disk space (as did the Win95 install b4 it). Surface testing sees no problems with media. A guy I was talking to said I needed to re-partition the HD since it probably hadn't been done as it was with the original preinstalled (bundled) SW.

Is it possible to use Fdisk to partition the HD without losing my current installed system configuration? I don't like living w/o the head room.

no its not. the only way to partition a disk without formatting it (loosing all data) is to use a special software like Powerquests Partition Magic.

If I remember correctly, Win98 comes with FAT32 converter (Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/FAT32 Converter) which you can use to convert your current partition from FAT16 to FAT32 system which has support for disks larger than 2Gb. After that you can use free Ranish Partition Manager to resize newly created FAT32 partition...

Ok gonna check that out...

I've DL the SW you suggested Max, wish me luck in using it! If I come back here soon, it worked...if I don't, well then I screwed something up and will be reinstalling everything...I know it won't be the SW fault

That was tense I can tell you; visions of a complete rebuild danced in my head as I chose to use the unused 9GB of my HD as FAT32 storage! ~whew!~ I was really biting my nails on the reboot...but it seems all is well I really wante djust a larger C: disk but I'll take what I got.

I copied an image to the new clean partition (D and then delelted it to do a basic test of function and that worked. (Had the new "disk" not actually been there, I would have gotten an error message) Now to determine how I can best use the "extra" space. I'm not used to having extra space, and have routinely trashed older files as the became obsolete. Now I can keep some of them! Hey What a scratch disk I can have huh?

i'm gonna test out ranish partition manager. glad to hear a successful partition story. two of my friends had horrible experiences with partition magic and lost all their data so i avoided it at all cost and stuck with good ol dos fdisk. let's see how ranish works out. thx for the tip!
