When I first start ps6 it takes an unusual amount of time to get through the sorting fonts list.
Occasionally it will freeze there. I run w98 2nd w/Athlon 750, 512 RAM, 60% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (20640MB free)
Available space on drive C: 20640MB of 39070MB (FAT32)

If you haven't yet done it, download the 6.0.1 update from adobe. And maybe try searching their Support Knowledgebase. I foundthis tech doc. It may help

have you recently installed a new font (s)? Maybe one of them is corrupt?

Try creating a new Font Folder (rename your old font folder) dump some fonts in there and see if PS will fire up. It could be a case of weeding out a bad font file.

Else check adobe.com ~Vp~

I used to have the same problem before I re-formatted - here was my solution: turn off anti-virus programs. I was using McCaffee(sp?) w/win98, and whenever I loaded up ps, it would freeze during the font reading, unless I disabled it.

don't know why.... but hope that helps?

same here guys.
it is not only MCaffee, it is also affected by Norton Utilities - i guess all Virus Scanning programs mess up the Font machine of PS. I first thought it was my memory but checking it it could only be a virus in a font (my first guess) or the virus program itself.

BUH! to virus programs.
Remember: Photoshop has one of the greatest memory machines / engines ... that would be the least thing to check .

60% system resources free

Your kidding! How much does that % increase when you turn of your virus software??

Think anout that.. Your using almost half of your system resources to do well.. nothing. Although that's kinda typical of Win 98. If you can, I'd suggest upgrading to Win2k. If you have over 256 Mb RAM in 98 it will only help in apps like PS, the rest will go unused. Win2k takes full advantage of you ram for multitasking ~cough~ and the like. It also has better resource management and stability than 98.

Morph:

Un-install it ... Or try disabling it from the system tray (Where the little clock is on the start bar).

I've been running the free version of AVG for quite some time now and I've been pretty impressed, low resource usage and it hasn't caused any of my programs (including PS6) to lock up.

I run Norton AV on a 450 pIII w/ 96 MB ram, PS 6.01, and the only slow down on the font sorting is the fact that I have over 650 fonts installed. No hang ups or freezes ~shrugs~

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

I know what you mean... I have well over 6000 unique fonts and usually have at least 800-1000 installed at any one time.

If you have that many fonts, it helps to use a font management program like Suitcase. Fonts do use up a lot of system resources, on both Macs and Windows. Particularly complex dingbat fonts.

Under Windows you can use The Font Thing to manage your font collections...

Most anti-virus programs have an on/off switch in the system tray nowadays. You can switch it off, start Photoshop, and switch it back on.
