1st - still too big (no, really).

Pretty decent work overall - nice grungy metal, pretty decent bevels - but I would definately shrink it down at least a little more. Of course, you'll have to go back and rework those highlights or your text will be all but unreadable.

Really well done

I don't want to ask for a tut, but that metal texture is really cool. Any quick tips you could offer?

What're you guys trying to say...?

Really? Just that tut? I need to take another look at it. I tried it out a few times when I was first starting with PS, and my results looked NOTHING like Drac's work, which is probably why I didn't recognize it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go beat myself about the head and neck...

Actualy I've never read that tute untill now. heh, it's quite good though.

I just used the standard chanels + lighting effects but I built everything up in layers.

I had several greyscale layers for the actual 3D allo, glossyness, texture ect ect and used two different textures to get the desired colour (after some curves/hue tweaking) and surface detail.

When I usualy want metal like this I use one chanel for the Lighting fx bump and use it on two or more layers. One for the general 3D look and another woth different (stronger) lights for the glossy highlights.

The channel was fairly basic as you can see:

Using different combinations of blending modes and curves adjustments here and there you can usualy simulate a fairly photo-real metal. Think of it like material mapping in a 3D program. Specular, glossiness, reflection etc ect...

I also go over various bits of each layer with the burn/dodge to tie things togther a bit more. I then flatten the layers (Duplicate them first) and do a final go-over with the airbrush (yellowish colour, dodge/burn mode) again. Sracthes were picked out from the textures I used and doged/burned to fit the light source. Finaly I might do a final curves adjustment, It all depends on how things are lookign by this stage.

As with most things, just play untill you get what you want. But I think the most important trick is in using two lighting fx layers for get the desired metal look. You can also alter the blending/brightness/contrast/curves/opasity.. anything of these layer any time you wish. Trying to get it right the first time with just one lighting fx layer is always a bitch IMO.

Hope that helped...

I didn't think you used the gurus tutorial, because the effect in that isn't half as good as what you've got, but it's the metal tutorial everybody posts when someone asks for one. I'd certainly be interested to see a tutorial on your metal though, if you ever get bored and need something to di.

...watch as Twitch, DL and Human Shield scramble to retract their links to the GN metal tutorial, which it turns out was NOT what Dracusis used to create his excellent sig.

I believe Obi-Wan Kenobi said it best when he said,

"Twitch, DL-44 and Human Shield can deceive you. Don't trust them."

Or something like that...

Oh, and I vote for a tutorial from Drac on that metal texture. That's a keeper...

Perhaps what you say is true, but I did specify that Drac's metal texture 'was cool and could he offer any tips', which implied that any responses offering said tips would refer specifically to methods of making Drac's metal texture.

Asking for "tips" does not immediately imply anything unless you specify it. Asking for a tutorial after saying his effect looks great, then we'd have been in the wrong... but all you asked for were tips. That can mean anything. I could say, "don't strap bloody meat to yourself and swim in shark infested waters", and it would be an acceptable answer. Of course, in response, [hint] you would say, "thank you for trying to help me." [/hint]

Now you're just splitting hairs, HS. That's okay, I'll play along.

I will now point to the word "that" used in my initial statement, "I don't want to ask for a tut, but THAT metal texture is really cool." 'That', referring not to just any metal texture, but specifically to Drac's.

Therefore through the utilization of a intra-paragraphical statement-dividing unit (ie, a period), I continued on with my thought, to request the aforementioned 'tips'.

[A sad Tigger. A humble Tigger.] Yes, yes... I did forget to thank you all for trying to help, and I am sorry about that. You guys are a great help (99% of the time, unless you're feeling ornery) to those of us with more mouth than PS skill. [Drunk] I love you guys! [/Drunk][/A sad Tigger. A humble Tigger.]

(Ah, y'all know I'm kidding when I abuse you, right? Right?)

Let's be REAL picky now...

"I don't want to ask for a tut, but that metal texture is really cool. Any quick tips you could offer?"

You NEVER specifically asked for tips on how to make THAT metal effect, you simply implied you'd like to make something like it. If I went up to a movie director and said, "That movie you made is really, really good! Any tips you could offer?", I would not expect him to give me a complete explanation of how he made that one movie... and certainly tips that were dropped by other passing directors who overheard my question would be acceptable too.

I like chocolate cream pie, but it has to have a big whopping load of fresh whipped cream on top, and the crust has to have some texture to it.

Know what I mean? I really hate it when the crust is like a slimey mushy disc like thing......it creeps me out. And whipped cream from a can is no comparison to fresh whipped cream, they're not even close.

Yeah.......chocolate cream pie.

BTW - Drac, I like the final version. the glare got a little toned down, and the text is nice and crisp. Nice work
