Alright folks,

I've spent some weeks on the search for a reliable, secure and neat-looking forum software comparable to UBB. From what I've seen so far, we have Ikonboard and YaBB. I've installed both and think that YaBB is the better solution because of its customizability. Has anybody made any experiences with one of these scripts?

Flik

YaBB is really slow with my domain name server -

Dunno about the architecture, but I think
InfoPOP is served "off-sight", but you lose some
control (I think - I haven't tried setting up an InfoPOP
account... I might just for the heckuvit -doesn't cost
anything until you start getting traffic).

Catgirl has a nice Ikonboard setup. She might be of assistance.

Well, you have several options that are faster and better (in my opinion) than UBB.

You might want to take a look at www.vbulletin.com. It's coded in PHP/MySQL and because it uses a database (MySQL on the backend instead of storing the posts in a text file like UBB does) it's faster and a lot less of a resource hog for the servers.

You can also look at www.phpbb.com which is also uses PHP/MySQL and is opensource. It's great and they started just recently and their new version that should be coming soon is supposed to be a serious contender to vBulletin when it comes to features but it'll remain opensource and free.

Hope this was of help.

well, i'm developing a php/mysql board! u can see it here. it was former known as MyBB, but the author didn't develop this anymore... and it's fast, feature rich, customizable, and most importantly, FREE for both private AND commercial use.

so send me an email if u wanna have this.

::edit - u'll see the board in german, but it also includes a english translation::

YaBB is poorly coded and extremely insecure. I downloaded it and started tinkering with it. After about a month I had fixed it up to the way I liked, removed most of the security holes, and basically learned Perl in the process. But the algorithms are horrible (for instance, I believe it assumes that every month has 30 days), and it's all very spaghetti coded. I wouldn't really recommend it.

If anyone owns a YaBB forum, I'd love for them to tell me so I could hack into it for fun. Change other people's profiles and stuff. =)

Yeah, that's what happens when you go offline for a bit. Sorry folks, I didn't mean to leave this thread alone. Thanks for all the advice and the help. In the meantime, I have installed the YaBB beta and it looks and runs fine with erhmm...well, certain modifications.

Hey Slime, I'd love to see you try and hack in. My ICQ is 23222376, you give me a buzz, I give you a URL

Well, Slime has tried and failed (thanks a lot for the help again, buddy!) to get into YaBB. It seems like they've done a pretty good job at the security section this time.
Malice, I can only recommend UBB, Ikonboard and YaBB. You might want to try your luck with http://cgi.resourceindex.com though. There are quite a number of scripts you can download and test there
