Here we go: some more sketches. Well, I haven't really posted recently, but in any case...

General C&C would be appreciated.

Sorry about the bad picture quality. I'm stuck with a digital camera, as opposed to a scanner.

Here we go:

---------------------

These ones are more recent (last 1-2 days, mostly just normal sketches. I've become completely enamored, as of late, with watercolor paper. And although I loathe watercolors, it makes great, although slightly expensive, drawing paper.

The following one I drew while layed up in the hospital about 1.5 weeks ago with a fractured back (luckily It was only fractured. Came pretty close to loosing control of my hands. Scary as hell. Skiing accident.).

The next ones were all drawn within the last one to two months. Maybe three. I drew the pictures in the first images from an anatomy book I'd bought: Anatomy, a Complete Guide For Artists, by Joseph Sheppard. I believe that all but on of these have been posted here before.

Yeah...

sorry to hear about that skiing acident...but anyways..

it's good to know that you are practicing. I am generaly not very good at giving advice, but lemmy try.

From what I remeber, I think your anatomy drawings improved.. somewhat. Still you need to work on the structure and volumes whole more.

The drawings look somewhat empty and lifeless, regradless if they are cartoons or from life...my best advise is try to stick with gestures. Do alot of them.. sittingm, standing, dancing, jumping...they are fun and simple...this will help you capture the entire figure quickly, before you will move onto anatomy and details.

Oh and one more thing, to help you practice more for your drawing skills try only using a ballpoint pen on a good paper. This will help take out your fear of mistakes... You can also use inkjet printer papers those are inexpensive papers, like what? 500 pages for $5.00, I think that?s a great deal compared to those expensive sketch books that go up to $20.00 for 50 pages.

I've been down on my luck finding a figure drawing class to attend. The college is full, and the studios around me aren't running them right now. So untill then I can't do much in terms of gesture drawing.

Why a ballpoint pen? Can't you do the same thing with a pencil? I've always like the pencil better: it looks much more organic. The idea behind the pen being you can't erase, right? So if you don't erase with a ballpoint, wouldn't it have the same effect?

Thank you for the critique though. I'll definitally try and look into that.

You can do figures very easily there are two options. The first is a mirror, the second is a small posing dummy.

I like the mirror option.

Yeah, I could use the mirror, as sitting doesn't go far, when I'm able to stand up for that long :P

The posing dummies are complete shit, I'm with Ruski here. I bought one a while back, and they aren't much use. They aren't even good for getting proportions - because you can memorize them. If anything, they're a $6 reference sheet on proportion. Meh, my proportions aren't the best, but the posing dummy doesn't help any.

CFB, a pen is good.
Here's my take on Ruski's advice.
With a pen, mistakes suck. You can't go back and erase.
You are basically forced to get it right with fewer strokes.
As you get better and more efficient with your strokes, your stroking confidence goes up and the mistakes are fewer and farther between.

Personally, I prefer chaulk and a small chaulk board for such an exercise.
Or even a super soft black chaulk on rough newsprint.
No dainty strokes there, so no room for sweeping mistakes.

Damn.
I'm going to have to break out my stuff one of these days.

I could do some short gesture drawings later tonight. I'll try that and then post them.

Thank you for the advice, Ruski and WarJournal

Maybe I'll try it with graphics sticks. That seems like a better introduction, though. But who knows.

Ok, here we go:

some sketches, including gestures, with a ballpoint: there is only 1 sketch in here i'm happy with, but anyways...it has little thumbnail gestures, and some of the larger figures started as a gesture - with just a few lines drawn. Crits/Comments would be appreciated. Hopefully I'm doing what was told:

This page, i noticed, has a significany amount of anatomical fuckery. I realize that.

We have done so.

cfb: Your anatomy work has come on a treat. In the fourth image you have some nice skeleton work but the abdominals in the top right look rather odd - too long and thin (compare that to the ones in the sixth picture from the book) - although I believe this kind of thing has come up before with DL providing some great advice (if you can find the other thread then I'll start an anatomy drawing FAQ) but I'll throw some further thoughts in:

As da Vinci has shown:

http://digilander.libero.it/debibliotheca/Arte/Leonardoana_file/page_01.htm

a firm understanding of the underlying muscle and bone can work wonders - see e.g. Grey's Anatomy:

http://www.bartleby.com/107/118.html

and some simple references:

http://images.google.com/images?q=abdominals

So some more theory, observation and practice should see things boxed off there - the main areas to be addressed are, as Ruski has said, to give the pictures more life. People just mooning around not doing much is probably a style but you'd be better off making them a little more dynamic and I know you can do that from previous pictures.

Anyway good stuff - keep sharing.

InI: Thank you for that tutorial on watercolors. I'm eager to try that out the next time I replenish my water-color paper supply. And get a brush. I've never tried wetting the paper beforehand, but it makes sense: it's to saturate the paper with water, to make sure the paper doesn't stretch when you paint, right? Anyways, thanks

Emperor: Yeah, that abdominal area is a bitch, which means I need to practice more! I should go buy a copy of Grey's Anatomy from a used bookstore: I see em all over the place. I attempted to give the pictures some life in the last two, but I guess it didn't work too well. Oh well. Guess I have to keep practicing...

Thank you both

Just some stuff I sketched today:

Tried to use more "confident strokes" on the right side of this one, but failed miserabely. And screwed up her anatomy while attempting to do so.

And just something I liked
