the asylum's grail is *not* finished. There is a a todo list of hwat's next in ->grailTodo.
Most of its entries will be completed, eventually, just having a bit of a stressful week right now.

InI: I'm not sure if there is really anyway to know. I'd guess that they wouldn't assign such importance to TITLE or ALT attributes as they would to actual link text (esp. as they could be used for spamming) but Google doesn't just rank specifically on the text of the link but also the content of the page that links to it (I think we've all got search results where one of the keywords was actually on the page linking to the one the search has returned) and so the ALT and TITLE would come in there in a general way along with all the other text on the linking page (with that in mind you'd also want to name all your images with the right keywords).

Soooooooooo although I can't be sure I'd guess they'd assign more relevance to the text of a link than to the linking page's content but it is worth doing both.

And adjust(e)ment of the [ img ] UBB code that would allow something like: [ img: my alt text ] URL of the image [ /img ] could do the trick and won't break all the images in the previous posts/sigs.

Then there is a reason for implementing alt tags in our sigs, right?
If not for google bombing,
at least for lynx users and the sake of having a short descriptive text associated to our sigs.

Oh most certainly - every image needs an ALT attribute and (if i is going to be a link) probably a TITLE one too for various usability and accessibility issues.

The question was about Googlebombing and ALT but you should be using ALT anyway - the only difference is that for Googlebombing and SEO (i.e. increasing the ranking of the page you link to and the current page, respectively) you need to make sure you have the right keywords in the ALT attribute (without stopping the ALT attribute working for its main purpose).

well, earlier today I learned that decoration images should have an alt of '' (not that I'd use any screenreader I couldn't tell to ignore 'decoration' in alt tags...).
Aren't signatures by definition 'decoration'?

No.

Ususally they are logos which identify a person or a site, and often are links to that site.

In that sense they most definately qualify as the type of image that - on a normal page - need an alt attribute.

I agree that such a setup for the sigs would be great, and help make the Asylum stand out even more than you guys have made it in respect to proper coding and accesibility and the like.

A decoration graphics might be the top left hand corner of an interface which doesn't do much other than be a top left hand corner. Clearly if you've sliced something up into 10 or 20 small graphics (whihc might repeat a number of times on a page) then actually giving them all meaningful attributes like ALT="top left corner" would make using a screen reader on the page useless.

As DL says the sigs should be trreated like buttons or similar graphical navigation - you could set a TITLE attribute to soemthing like "Visit this other page" if it was inside a link but that sounds like a pain and I wouldn't bother.

I like poi's idea of adjusting the UBB to allow people to add their own alt text. I don't think automatic addition of alt text or title text would be a good idea. First of all, if it was automatic, it would have to be generic, thus making it fairly useless. Yes, it would be "accessible," but it would also be pointless on the semantic level. Secondly, users should be responsible for making sure their images are accessible, and if they don't that's their problem. The Asylum is not responsible for the content of a user's post, so why should it be responsible for the accessibility of their sigs?

Just my two cents...

well... a [ img=my alt text]url[/img] tag in addition to [ img]url[/img] shouldn't be much of a problem.
I'll add it to the todo list.
