I just opened up FireFox (v.8) and realized that ALL of my bookmarks have been erased. Let me re-phrase that. ALL of the pages I've booked marked within the last 5 years or so have been deleted. Same with Internet Explorer. I haven't installed any software. My computer hasn't crashed. I just got something from my bookmarks about 2 minutes ago.

Any reasons why this would happen? I'm on the verge of tears.

I have the same problem, except my Internet Explorer bookmarks are still there. Firefox seems to do this every 30 days or so. I'm not sure why. I just back them up.

Yeah. I can't help, but I think it must be a common problem. Maybe it has something to do with the new beta they have out.

That possibility is the sole reason for the creation of my links page.

Firebird and the story off lost bookmarks

Am I the only that hasn't been afflicted with a case of disappearing bookmarks?

Does that mean this isn't Firefox-specific?

DL, I'm gonna have to set up a links section like yours to have a perminent record of my links from now on. I've always kept a links section but I kept it limited to general links I visit often.

Ozph, Probably not. Come to think of it I don't know when the last time I used IE was. Since I'm always changing OSs on my computer theres a real good chance I just never bookmarked anything in IE.

[edit] I've never lost my bookmarks. [/edit]

Actually, FireFox's bookmarks are already in an HTML page. It should be possible to make script to upload it if the offline version is bigger than the online one, and eventually restore the online version otherwise.

Bookmark Backup extension: a simple extension that basically makes another copy of bookmarks.html on exit.
Bookmarks Synchronizer extension: uses FTP to synchronize your local copy of bookmarks.html with an online one.

Note: I haven't tried either of the extensions above. Just thought someone might be interested.
