I know I have kicked this idea around with Rinswind over some ideas for actually producing books in both an eBook and paper format but I thought it worth throwing the debate open for ideas, insight, experience, etc. esp, as this article suggests:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/online/story/0,3605,1205143,00.html

new ranges of services are becoming available allowing smaller print runs (although with higher base costs - actually getting closer to the dreaded vanity publishing) and this field could get big quickly.

We have discussed it here before but it is proving tricky finding the discussion. Its over at the GN here:

but the link to the Asylum discussion doesn't work anymore but I'll try and dig it up.

Good luck - I spent a while looking around and couldn't find it. The URLs to archived threads resolve just fine but those that haven't been archived go elsewhere and searching for 'print ' and 'demand' doesn't appear to find it.

I have a couple close friends who work on this technology at Xerox, it is some pretty amazing stuff. They tell me that you can get a single book if you want it. That is what the whole thing is about.

If you have any specific questions let me know, I can forward them to my friend.

Dan it's get even better you could two books one for you and one for your mother, which both are personalized.
So you could have "For Dan, the asylum warmage" on the first page while your mother has "For my dearest Mom" on exacrly the same place. Both books are completly identical except for the first page...

Rinswind 2th, that kind of thing has been around a lot longer than one would think really.

What kind of books are we talking about here? Paperback? hardback?

Paperback would be a lot cheaper obviously. It is when you get into a full color layout that it gets expensive too. At that point you are talking a different ballgame. Companies like Xerox and such can do some really good stuff. Not all "copier" companies have the capability to do a large book and forget about large a large amount.

It is difficult to find a place that can do the stock paper for the cover also. Printing onto that kind of heavy glossy paper is really hard to do well.

If you look into it further, see if the company uses a brand of printer called Océ. They are some high end printers. Really cool technology. The printer actually "opens" the paper up and blends the ink into the fibers of the paper. Unlike most printers where the paper is heated and the ink is melted onto the paper. If the ink is blended into the fabric of the paper, it will not run if it gets wet.

Hope this idea goes further. Could be really cool.

Later,
