I just closed Nala's A tought one... and although I left an explaination I thought some more discussion was in order to find out when exactly we should be closing threads.

Now, I don't believe in closing threads just because I disagree with whats being said but I felt this thread was completely inappropriate for the Asylum. The Philosophy and other Silliness forum wasn't created to post messages about murder. It was created to discuss silly things like politics and life after death. I doubt whether DHTML/Javascript or Photoshop Pong, Anyone? were any more appropriate for this topic. Although not every post in every forum is appropriate, I think this topic has about as much merit as viol's anti-Sematism posts.

I thought this topic should have been deleted/archived, and discussion taken to e-mail, but I didn't want to over step my boundries. I thought it would be best to lock the topic and leave a clear explaination as to why I closed it in the first place. Everyone can read my reasoning here, although its close to what I've said here.

Comments or opinions?

Jestah,

It has gone to email and I agree it belongs there. I'm not sure I agree with deleting the thread because I really don't like censorship, but locking it is entirely appropriate, IMO.

I would ask that everyone please keep this situation in their prayers and/or wishes because as far as I can tell it is very serious.

Its a judgement call really. The forum is: 'Philospohy and Silliness' so it is really for a mix of anything that doesn't really fit elsewhere and we need to be open to offering inmates advice on moral dilemmas and serious real lfe issues as well as the ins and outs of religion, jokes, poems, war, etc. as sometimes its easier to turn to a more anonymous source rather than someone closer to the issue who may not be able to give impartial advice.

That said some real life problems like rape, murder, etc. are rather beyond our remit and are things that should really be dealt with in real life and people need to be directed to someone in authority that they can trust (a teacher, priest, etc.) as any other advice we could give owuld be unwise, possibly unhelpful and potentially capable of making a bad situation worse.

Also when they are presented by new inmates there is always the possibility that it is just someone trolling by dropping extreme problems into a forum and watching people scamrble to deal with it.

Just my two cents: In the thread in question, intimations of illegal activity were made (ie, it was mentioned that someone was contemplating murder). In my mind, that is sufficient grounds to lock and/or delete the thread, depending on MS discretion.

Now, if Nala had just mentioned that her friend's father had been murdered and he was struggling to deal with it, that would have been a tougher call. In that case, I would probably say that the thread has as much right to exist as any other. It might make some people uncomfortable, but I don't think it would have been entirely inappropriate. Depending on your point of view, it could be just as appropriate as the recent abortion thread.

I probably don't have much of a say in the matter, not being an MS, but I just thought I'd offer an opinion from the common people.

Things can get awfully messy, legally speaking, when such things as the intent to murder are discussed.

Everyone is better off with the thread being removed, IMO.

and since deleted threads can be reviewed and resurrected by MS, I'm removing it now.

I don't think there was any serious possibility the thread could have been a problem for anything that might happen in this case. But there really isn't any problem with removing it either in this case. I think this has been a good learning experience for us when it comes to the task of moderating.

As for the whole taks of moderation, I think that the current system which allows us to review every change that has been made is very nice. That way if inappropriate actions have been taken it is not the end of the discussion, a rollback is always possible.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know if I was over stepping any boundries in closing that thread. I mean it wasn't really breaking any rules but I didn't think it was real appropriate for the Asylum.
