In another thread I said:

quote:
I would ask everyone to keep an eye out for useful threads and fill in the bits they can and this goes double for people starting threads that will get archived (like the sig contest, speed painting, etc.) or if you thread gets a lot of good input. I'd like to think that all the inmates can help with the first part of the archiving process and the mods can then do the final tidying up.

So if you see a good thread fill in the bits you can and throw us the link here:

Just as a bit of extra information - any user can add the description and abstract by clicking on the 'preserve' link on the bottom right of the page. A mod needs to fill in the keywords for it to be archived but if you fill in the first two bits the whole process makes it quicker and simpler.

And to avoid confusion a thread in the Sink says it is preserved when it technically isn't (as far as I'm aware anyway) - we might want to correct that to avoid confusion.

I've tried out the preserve thread on a couple of ones in philosilly. I wasn't exactly sure if I did it correctly but I think I did. Is there anyway to know what threads have been marked for preservation? It may get a bit tricky after doing a few over several days.

there is a problem in symantics methinks. for some reason "preserved" refers to those threads which are already in the archives the kiss principle would suggest retaining the word "archived" to indicate threads in the archive.

this thread originated to list those threads in the sink (or elsewhere) which need archiving aka preserving. (see first post) e.g. the thread i posted above was found through a search engine*

- edit - if it's in the sink, it's not archived/preserved - even if it says its preserved.

* webcrawler.com/ - i was curious to see if it still existed. it's now a meta-search engine

well technically it is preserved - no one can post to it anymore.
For it to move out of the sink, the keywords need to be added.

As for the 'can't see where the keywords have been added' problem, threads that have been given keywords are moved out of the sink once a day (though not at exact times, just whenever I do my daily bookmark visiting).

So long,

TP - let me see if i have this correct. you're saying that technically all threads that are in the sink are preserved? and that the process of giving it keywords make it archived?

if yes, then hooray! i understand if no, then would you reword that?

the purpose of this thread is: to list those threads worth archiving in order to make the job (of removing threads from the sink to the archives) easier for the madsci's. (see first post of this thread)
