Occasionally odd images show up in the press so I'm going to throw them open to the PS experts to kick around (especially given the idea that these days you can't trust any image given the wide availablility of high power image editting software).

Your first mission (if you chose to accept it) is this baffling creature:

http://www.news-record.com/news/local/rand/creature_060304.htm

It looks to me like a deer's head has been jammed on a fox/dog body and a rather poor quality shadow added but whats your opinion?

It's been awhile since I took a close look at such a photo.
When using PS to scrutinize a possible fake, one plugin that has seriously helped me Adaptive Equalization. See: Reindeer Graphic for it.

Once you get the hang of Adaptive E., you can easily show the cut-n-paste lines or painting overs that the eye can't really see.

Hhhmmm..... *rubs me fake 'o' bread.. In suspicion of fakness*

It's a small crappy image that?s it going to be hard to see if it is fake or not. Also they say:

quote:
He's seen the creature off and on since about Christmas, with it wandering up several nights in a row, then disappearing for awhile.

&

quote:
He captured the animal on two frames of film on May 20, using a motion-sensing camera that his wife gave him for Christmas.

So where is rest of the images? To fully find out if it's fake you need to see the other videos or images. You can't go of one photo and say it fake or not, if they have proof of more images and video of it moving and things.

But more likely if it's one image and that?s all they have, it might be fake. But if there is a few images of the same surroundings and lighting, etc they it's probably be real.

But for me personally I'd sit on the fence.

It may well be the body of a fox, (this is one I took recently) but I think the tail is from another animal as well.

One of the first things I look for are shadow discrepencies. Unfortunately... the head is riiiight about level with the area the shadow starts. So, cancel that out. The fur around the neck area seems a little odd...

http://ruku.port5.com/whoops.jpg

There's a little line I noticed... Patching something into a flash bleached image is a hard thing to do if the white ballance and color is off...

Is it just a coincidence with jpeg compression? I dunna think so.

my take on it?....there is a BIG zoo there. That thing escaped from the zoo and is now running rampid through Asheboro and will soon hit High Point. I fear for it because my two dogs will tear it up

Ok, we watched this on the news with much interest - I thought it might be a faked photo too... (C - you don't watch the news? They were on about this for a whole day or so on Fox 8)

Here's the follow up article: http://www.news-record.com/news/local/rand/creature_061004_hp.htm

They believe it's a Grey Fox or something similar. And the photographer swears the photo's not doctored.

(Trust Emps to find a link to an article about our little neck o' the woods when he's all the way over in the UK... man, you really don't get our much, do you?)

bodhi23: Out? Out where? You mean there is an out? I don't like the sound of that at all - it strikes me as crazy talk!! Nurse!!!!!

As a good example I had read the followup already

Those shadows still look suspicious to me.

Well, you know, there is the exercise yard... it's not much, but the chainlink patterened view of the water is nice... and a dose of sunshine every day is supposed to be very healthy.

The picture still looks strange to me also. I tried a little to see if I couldn't find any more about it, since it was such a big deal for about 24 hours (not much happens 'round here...), but apparently, those two articles in the N&R were it, other than the actual newscasts. I tell you what, we had to watch 2 hours of repeating news broadcast before they actually discussed it in any detail. Bastards.

As for duplicate sightings, I think people were just seeing things 'cause they wanted to see if they could get on the news too. Buncha red-neck prima donnas...

I haven't been able to turn on my tv since Lacuna stole my power chord and Suho took all the power for those funky little experiments he's doing in the basement.

That looks a hell of a lot like almost every image I can find of a Maned Wolf - though this can hardly be considered an expert opinion. The Maned Wolf seems to be longer-haired and possesses a bushier tail as well, but even the coloration is significantly similar.

Hmmm....
Mange? Malnutrition? Worms?

Those shadows looked pretty good to me at first, apart from the odd sense that the light source is not actually connected to the camera..?

The picture is far too small to facilitate a solid conclusion, so in the absence of further evidence, leg-work seems the best solution to determining the proof.
If something like that was spotted near me, I would be looking for its tracks. Find the tracks, identify the animal - or at least discount various possibilities.

Well, The Fox Head is too light/bright/exposed, and it's bigger than the Beagle's body in proportion. Not to mention the fur is too different, the Beagle has short, slightly bristly, tan and black fur, while the Fox has Medium, Fluffier, Red and white Hair

That's what I see in the pic.
