I'm following the hammer tutorial where you split vertices and extrude 6 iterations (step 11)

Now i'm supposed to be able to scale the 2 faces to look like a hammer claw, but i can't reselect or do it correctly. How am I supposed to do this?

if maya's installed, here's the url

thanks

i've done that tute but don't have maya here at work. whatever the case, if you have the selection tool picked you should be able to click on the faces then scale them accordingly. if you can post a screenshot or something of that page of the tutorial i can probably help more.

Here are some screenshots, they'll probably explain it better than me :P

OK...not knowing a thing about maya, hre is where I think you've gone wrong, from general 3D principals. it appears that you have to extrude the two faces seperatly, so that you have two seperate polygon sets for when you scale them. it appears now that you only have 1 set, which is why the back face is scaling down towards the centrepoint.

Go back to the step where you started extruding and do each of the faces one at a time. As for getting that soft-selected scaling on them, I dunno, you'll have ot ask one of the Maya gurus about that.

In a previous step, I split the vertices. This is from the tut:

quote:
In a prior step, you split the vertices at the top and bottom of the edge that divided the two faces. This created two additional, overlapping vertices at each split vertex (a total of six vertices). The extra vertices were necessary to create a gap between the blades. Without the extra vertices, the two blades would be a solid single blade.

If you had extruded each face individually to create the two blades, you would not have needed to split the vertices to create the gap. However, it would have been harder to make the two blades exactly the same length, width, depth, and so on.

When you extrude two or more faces at the same time, the manipulators influence both identically. Symmetry is ensured.

i'll have to run thru the tute again, but you missed something somewhere once you split the vertices tho two sections should independently scale after you've extruded them.

Maybe i'm extruding wrong, after I extrude it automatically switches to the "show manipulator tool" but has no manipulators(arrows to scale/rotate/move)

I can't get the show manipulator tool to have any manipulators when i'm trying to do anything.
