I'm in the process of building a site where I'll be selling web templates. This will be my first shot at "automated" selling... where the buyer buys, and then gets what he/she wants without my interaction. I have a sellers account with 2CheckOut and when I set up my products (or templates) I have the option of a return URL for a successful purchase. I'm thinking that this is were I would put http://www.mydomain.com/template1/ for downloading. My concern is that once someone has bought that template, and can see the simple URL he/she could return at any time and easily guess the other template URL's. Does anyone use 2CheckOut and can maybe clarify this for me? How do I go about making sure that a directory or file is not accessable unless purchased? I'm asking here first (as apposed to 2checkout) because the last "tech help" I got from 2CheckOut was like pulling teeth.

well, you could do referer checking, but that won't be 100% reliable and can easily be faked.

How about either email delivery after purchase (the result page can send the mail),
or a scheme where users first sign up, then purchase, than their account is marked as having bought this template, and they can redownload their payed-for-template by login in again?

This is difficult as it does require some work from 2CheckOut to see exactly what their systems offer. The easiest way is to do the "referal thing." but that can cause some problems and can be faked as mentioned.

I like the idea of sending it via email, but with the current workings of the web many people can not receive email.

How about having a script that will serve up the downloads via a pre-created random URL string.

template1 = mydomain.com/gzA7uT6b/
template2 = mydomain.com/8o0agTkL/

eccetera. The url's don't have to make sense.

Well, I have found that the older version of 2CheckOut had an option of "Masking" the return URL... but I have not been able to find it with the current version I am under. I've sent their tech support a ticket. I would hope that the new version would have it if the old one did.
