Topic awaiting preservation: Office 97 unregister user name

I've been tasked with removing a registered user name from an Office 97 install...without uninstalling and reinstalling Office 97. I've researched how to do it on MS site and all they say is to uninstall and reinstall but I think that the user name has to be registered somewhere in the registry and for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere...

Two black pills for the first inmate to answer this correctly....

I don't have a copy of Office97 installed, but for microsoft products, you should be able to search the registry for the exact name specified as the user in the software "About" screen.

in regedit:

search string: "Illinois Smith" (assuming that is the user name)
check the box for "data", but not "keys" or "values", and also check the box for "match whole string only".

then just keep hitting F3 until you see something about MicrosoftOffice.

Ok I did exactly what you said and there were 0 results from my search for the registered users name

Ok, I looked into it and it seems that Office XP stores the userInfo in Binary rather than as a string.

The registry key for OfficeXP is as follows (regedit will let you edit the binary data):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\UserInfo

The key for Office97 might be similar - if not, search for the binary version of the username.
