So tomorrow I have an interview at a new company (actually 4 interviews with 2 different people each time) and I'm trying to prepare myself for common interview questions. Anyone have any good interviw questions they've been asked that threw them a curveball?

It's for a position managing a development team. Its a mix of Creative Services (design) and Engineering. Think of a we front end development team.

I've prepped for these basics

"tell us your background"

"What are your strengths"

"What are you weaknesses?"

"Do you have any questions for us"

"Why would you like to work here"

I'm mostly need help with management related questions. This is my weak part.

Here's one I get whenever I've interviewed:

"How do you handle conflict?"

This one is also a good one for a management postion, as they may want to know how you would mediate a conflict between subordinates.

This one also:

"Tell us about a situation in which you (handled conflict, dealt with a deadline, etc)"

These kinds of situations are sometimes hard to come up with on the fly. Maybe prepare some various tales about your previous work experiences - some conflict situations, things that occurred and you really showed yourself at your best.

Then there's the ever present:

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

Good luck!

"What are your hobbies?"
And some nasty "what if..." questions like

"What if your project is almost near an important deadline when somthing goes wrong,
you promised your girl/partner/child/grandpa to be present on the birthday party. Which is hard when you need to work extra hours to correct the problem for the deadline.
When you miss the deadline, you have a problem with your client/project manager/boss.
When you miss the party you have serious problems with the family/partner.
What is your most elegant solution to this? "

They gave me no choices and i did not knew what they wanted to hear.....

Rule 1, always do your research on the compant you're interviewing at.

"What would you consider your primary weakness?"
"Why should we hire you?"
"What can you do for us?"
"Your resume says such-and-such, can you elaborate on that?"

Best of luck.

Be prepared to easily explain your complex technical accomplishments. If you can't explain what you did without using acronyms that could be bad. You want to be able to have normal Joe Human Resources be able to understand exactly what you are talking about. Even if it is a programmer interviewing you, you will want to be able to explain what you have done in plain english.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't use the complex diction you are used to using in a technical environment, but you might be asked to explain something rather complex in a simple fashion. And if you are going to a coding position be prepared to write some code in the languages they are interviewing you for.

Questions for Interviewing a SysAdmin :

"You see a wounded puppy bleeding and whimpering on the side of the road while you're running to work to fix a downed computer that many users are waiting for. Do you let the puppy die?" "Why not?"

"How well do you program under the influence of hard drugs?"

"Have you ever beaten or killed a co-worker?"

"Give me a rough estimate of the maximum dollar amount that you've stolen from each of your previous employers."

"How do you work in a team situation when all the other team members are fools and idiots?"

One thing that I think is important is the vocation of spouse, family members, or close friends. Not always important, but good to know about. When your prospect goes home at night, does he/she have someone to bounce ideas off of? Or to discuss problems with?

Let's say that I'm looking for daycare and find a few good folks. Personally, I would want to know what the spouse does for a living. I would be more likely to hire someone with a spouse that works for the school system or does physical therapy with handicapped children.

People that are surrounded by their job, even if vaguely related, tend to do much better. They tend to be the more passionate ones.

How are M&M's made?

On second thought, that would only apply if you were being interviewed by Microsoft. But hey, it couldn't hurt to know. Good luck.
