When I click on any of my toolbar buttons, they immediately open up the tool options if there is one available. For example, click on the marque button opens it up as if I were trying to change from rectangular to elliptical marque. This happens when I use the regular left click to select a new tool. I haven't changed any settings on my computer at all, so I'm not sure what's causing this. I have a Microsoft 5-button trackball mouse, and have been using it for a while now with no problems or issues. OS is XP and I have Photoshop 7. Anyone have any suggestions? It's not breaking the program for me, just annoying mostly since I can't figure out what's causing it to happen.

possibly you have a 'stuck' shift key... hit all your shift keys, and ctrl, and alt, and if it's still happening, reboot,
if it's still happening then, come back, and tell us if anything else seems to be strange.

Well, this was truly odd. I was also having a problem with the game I play (Lineage 2). When I first logged into the game, and hit my right mouse button, it would alt+tab me out of the game, but only if my cursor was near th bottom of the screen. I could right click anywhere else, but as soon as I did it near the bottom of the screen, alt+tab. Couldn't figure that problem out either.

So I checked settings, nothing. Rebooted, nothing. Made sure all my keys were working fine and none were stuck. In the process of checking everything though, I did my windows update and then rebooted after that. When I started up Photoshop afterwards, I got a notice about having my scratch disk on the same volume as the application, as if everything had been reset completely. Photoshop is now working fine, and I'm no longer having any issues in my game.

Really strange, since all I patched were some security updates, and I don't think any of them related to the mouse.

That is rather odd.
Sounds like you have got one of those computers that have started to develop a personality all of it's own.

This honestly sounds like Windows "Sticky Keys"... Windows XP has shortcuts, by default, to rutn these on if you hit certain keys in certain patterns. To check it this is the case, go to Control Panel, then click on Accessibility Options. Under the "Keyboard" tab, you will see if Sticky Keys is on ir not. You can also go into the Settings for each, and turn off the shortcut.

me. not you.
