no not that. your mind and the gutter, man ...

not a lot of people here know me, mostly cause i lurk and because lately, i've been more of an artist/designer in my heart than on paper/screen.

also, strangely enough, i always seem to have a big exciting(?) project of some sort going on to keep me more busy than i get paid to be.

anyway, so these days the project is a private training establishment where i'm putting together a curriculum for a new graphic design/media studies course, and this is where i, faithful (though obscure) asylumite, solicit the advice of those seasoned designers out there in a little general market research.

just three questions. in your humble opinion:

1. which design software is LEAST likely to become extinct in the next 10 years?

2. what vital design/print media skill is most lacking in the industry?

3. in ten years, will graphic designers be able to cut it without at least some digital programming skill?

feel free to elaborate

it's just that many graphic design job vacancies we've found already ask for at least some programming skill ... it seems to be where the trend is heading.

Your questions/wording seem to be talking about print but I'm not entirely sure...

1. Adobe Illustrator, defacto standard for vector illustrations and as things continue technology wise, vector art as opposed to bitmap is likely to increase in my opinion, especially in regards to screen work
2. hard to put into words because I lack it mself, but, color issues, what will print how on what printer/press. I'm not comfortable in this area but whenever I talk to other artists or printers I usually end up thinking I know more than they do
3. *graphic* designers? sure!

edit: forgive my lack of sensitivity: congratulations! =) sounds like you're happy to be doing this, hope it's a rich experience for you, not just monetarily, but experience.

thanks heaps for the sensitivity, but not to worry .. i hardly noticed the lack

Ini i see what you're saying. it presents an interesting challenge as far as trying to put together a qualification that will be valid for more than 3 nanoseconds (or at least more valid for a longer period of time than design certificates offered at other schools).

a similar situation is illustrated (pun very much intended) by your 2nd answer, JKMabry. on our curriculum advisory board is a pre-press manager for a local printhouse who can gripe for hours about how little his interns know about colour spectrum, line screen, dpi, film layup, etc. but then is forced to concede that much of that knowledge will be unnecessary soon because our wondrous new technology.

put it this way. if you were looking to hire some designers/Mac Operators for your advertising/marketing/something to do with print/multi media company, what skills would you be looking for?
