Hi,
I'd like to come up with a gold plated version of this logo:

Any tips on how to achieve this effect?

Well, first you need to determine which parts will be raised, and which will not, and how the transition between the two will go.

After that, I would recommend using Lighting Effects.

You'll have to make a height map channel - Off hand I'm not sure how tough that will be, but it shouldn't be too bad.

I would start by copying the layer and pasting it into a channel. Give a series of blurs starting with just a couple pixels, the 1, then .5. Give that a try, adjust to taste.

Perhaps some hand tweaking of the map will be needed...

After that a good gaussian blur and curves adjustment on the output should clean it all up nicely.

Starting with the right base color and using the light-color options in the filter dialogue should be all you need on that end of things.

you may get a good start on the height map just droping it to grayscale

Karl, I had PS all fired up when I read this thread so I thought I'd give it a twirl.

This is just a quick example, basically using the method DL-44 suggested. The gold colour and contrasts could be greatly improved with a little tweaking.
