We all know how adjustment layers work. You create an adjustment layer, such as curves, and that layer will effect the layer (if clipped) or layers (if not clipped) underneath it.

Can a similar thing be done so that the same layer effect, such as satin, can be applied to all the layers beneath? Or do I have to save my settings as a layer style and apply it to each layer separately?

Yes it can be done.

Create a new adjusment layer (you don't even need to tweak the settings), and finally add a layer effect to your adjustment layer : it will affect all your layers.

You could also, on a new layer, do a quick ctrl+alt+shift+e - copies all visible layers and pastes together on a single layer. I use this quite often when I need to keep elements seperate to tweak, but together to effect all at once.
