btw i was also looking for some tutorials in the faq, but unfortunately i dont know where to start....all i want is a cool looking rendered font, with a nice reflection, or any other effects....any help is would be very appreciated

Wow! All of me's have been called!!!

*looks around*

eh... Well, where are we?

Umm... Yes, we did use 3d max... *rummages around the ol' hard drive* and I am almost 100% positive that I inadvertently deleted the file. Anywhoo...
I used Max 6 with the Mental Ray glass material on some text that I edited and extruded. The big cheese is the Mental Ray Glass... That stuff is gold. I believe I also made a redish plane above and below the glass and then lit the glass with 3 lights... although i dont remember that very well. I did have 2 red planes though, I would bank on that. I think you can also go in and adjust the color and properties of the glass itself... although you can not blend the glass material with anything else.

Then i tweaked it in PS.

Lemme know if you have any specific questions... i could slap something out fo yah, no worries.

Oh, and thank you! Its the simple things in life... heh.

A little 3DSM Nugget o' Joy.

Do your text and give it Raytrace with some IOR.
Do up your environment to give the text something to refract.
Let's say that part of your environment includes some objects.
Let's also say that you want the objects to be refracted but not rendered beyond refraction.
Well, select those objects, right click > Properties and turn off Visible to Camera.

Tada.
Your text will have all of those lovely things refracted, but those lovely things won't be a part of the render.

Visible to Camera has other uses, but I'm sure you'll figure them out when the situation calls for it.

WarJ, that's a nugget I believe I will pick up and keep. I did not know about camera visibility options. That would make a "oh no I'm a vampire and I have no reflection" scene really easy, right? Wait, that's backwards. I'm pretty sure I remember a limit raytracing objects option too. Though in Brazil, things behave a tad different.

You are right about it being backwards from the vampire effect.
For the vampire effect, turn off Visible to Reflections/Refractions.
Not too hard to miss.

You know, this is making me want to dig into the Layer Manager and G-Buffer junk.
Thanks a lot.

*kicks open another maxer window*

First, to get to the Mental Ray materials you must go to the common render tab. Down at the bottom pick Mental Ray in the "Asign Renderer" rollout.

Then the materials will appear with all the other Materials in the Material/Map Browser. The Metnal Ray Materials Have a yellow Sphere to their left.

"Glass (physics_phen)" is the material you want.

If you just put a teapot with the default glass material, it will only render out black. Either put some other object in the scene (a plane, box, foo) for the light to reflect or up the "Phong Coefficient" in the Glass Parameters.

The way I made my text was to put a plane above and below the text, and then tell the plane to be renderable, but Not visible to the camera. That way it would not render out, and I could easilly take an alpha from make and key out the black.

Give me a day or 3 and i will kick up some pictures and the like. I am trying to get some neon down at the moment, and I think glowing glass would look pretty cool.

I have not forgotten... but... dang. I did *something* to get that effect and I have not yet been able to duplicate it. So uh... more latter?
