Neato, but it'd look less linear if on each frame you pick some points at random and shift the intensity by one in one way or another to introduce some noise are various positions ( and especially height ).

Eep! No offense, InI, since you're an extremely capable coder, but that fire is.... ugly.

Please read:

http://freespace.virgin.net/hugo.elias/models/m_ffire.htm (very accurate)

It sort of looks like an upside down water-thingy, the things you can that you can walk under a light mist of water. But it's pretty cool.

Yes, I agree that it looks like it'd be cool if you changed the colors and put it over a picture of a waterfall, or if it's able to go diagonally then a twister.

I was playing too... forgive the messiness, this is my second ever applet
http://mine.metaatem.net/fire.php

forgot a few things...
1) not sure why it pulls to the left - any ideas?
2) tried a cooling map, didn't like how it was coming out (but I didn't smooth the map at all)
3) its clickable.

^__^ I've been playing with fire too.
32 bytes fire effect in assembly.
Ok, it's rather ugly compared to the fires effect shown above, but don't forget that it takes only 32 bytes, thus I had to use the default VGA palette.

I've got a VERY basic plasma running (Thanks p01), here it is
http://mine.metaatem.net/plasma.php
the source is linked - please *ANY* advice you have, I'd love to hear it.
I don't totally grasp the concept of plasma yet, so I can't make it cooler.
my goal is to have two plasma's interfere with each other. I like that effect a lot!

InI: I already pointed kastner to TinyPTC after a talk ( and debugging session ) on ICQ
I'm no Java expert so I didn't know about the appropriate drawing method.

Notice, that the cache of FireFox really likes the .class files and don't reload them unless you clear your cache contrary to IE.

Thanks to TinyPTC, and InI who explained me how to compile a .java, here goes my first applet

And guess what, that's yet another fire.

Ok, I made my first TinyPTC fire applet
http://mine.metaatem.net/fireptc.php

I still needed to use two fire arrays, I thought I could get away with one, but it produces a blue flame.

p01 - awesome job, I really like your palette... I'm gonna go look at your source now - can you set your mime type so I can view it in the browser?

Edit: Ok, looked at p01's source.. and WOW thats small... mine is HUGE compared! jeeze

I still want to make an interference plasma, but I'm more interested in 3d dot fields (not sure what they are called), I'm off to read more...
thanks for all the help guys, I'm having a great time

kastner: nice cube. I missed the latest update.

InI: non mais ça ira oui ?!
It's probably a bit too early for a Java Pong, but if you're in hurry we could go "easy". I haven't coded in C/C++ since almost 5years and don't know the packages of Java ... though I doubt I really need them to code some demo effects.

Nope the *254)>>10 thing is here on purpose

In fact there's a damping by a ratio of 254 over 256 ( 254 >> 8 in fact ), on the sum of 4 values picked in the fireBuffer ... that need to be divided by 4 ( >> 2 in fact ). Once you combine these two operation you get that *254)>>10 thing.

But you're right, there's no need to cast the whole thing in int.

http://mine.metaatem.net/plane3d.php
left and right change the speed (and direction) of rotation
+/- on the keypad and * & / on the keypad also change variables.

Lemme know what you think.

For my next little applet, I'm trying to use sprites, but am having a very hard time getting images to work with tinyPTC. Can someone give me a hint - I was trying to use a PixelGrabber, but I'm not sure if that is a blind alley or not.
